Sophie could feel the weight of the key in her pocket as she stood at the edge of the lake. The early morning mist curled over the water, casting an eerie, silver glow. The oak tree that had been their childhood hideout loomed in the background, its gnarled branches stretching like arms toward the sky.
Liam was beside her, looking as though he’d rather be anywhere else.
“Tell me again why we’re here,” he said, crossing his arms.
“Because the journal said so,” Sophie replied, pulling the book from her bag. She flipped to the page that had changed overnight. The words glowed faintly: Bring the key to the lake.
“And what exactly are we supposed to do? Throw it in and hope something magical happens?”
“Maybe,” Sophie said, giving him a sideways grin.
“You have no idea, do you?”
“Nope,” she admitted.
Liam groaned. “Fantastic.”
The lake was quiet except for the occasional rustle of leaves. Sophie knelt near the water’s edge and pulled the key out of her pocket. It caught the weak sunlight, glinting as if it were alive. She turned it over in her hands, examining the intricate design engraved on its surface.
“It feels… heavy,” she murmured.
“It’s a key, Sophie. They’re supposed to be heavy.”
“No, not like that. It feels… important.”
Liam crouched next to her, peering at the key with reluctant curiosity. “So, what now? We just—”
Before he could finish, the water rippled unnaturally, as though something beneath the surface was moving. Both of them froze.
“Did you see that?” Sophie whispered.
“See it? I felt it.”
The ripples grew larger, forming a circle in the center of the lake. Slowly, the water began to glow, faint at first but growing brighter with each passing second. Liam stumbled backward.
“Okay, nope. I’m out. This is officially too weird.”
“Don’t you dare,” Sophie said, grabbing his arm. “You’re the one who said we’re in this together.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t sign up for glowing water!”
“Too late.”
Sophie held the key tightly and stepped closer to the edge. The glowing circle seemed to pulse, like it was waiting for her. Taking a deep breath, she extended her hand over the water.
“Sophie, don’t,” Liam warned, his voice tight with panic.
“We’ve come this far,” she said, and before he could stop her, she dropped the key into the lake.
For a moment, nothing happened. The key sank, disappearing into the glowing water. Then, the lake erupted in light. A brilliant column shot into the sky, illuminating the entire area. Sophie shielded her eyes, but she couldn’t look away.
In the center of the light, a figure began to form.
It was a woman—ethereal and shimmering, as though she were made of the same light as the lake. Her long hair flowed like liquid gold, and her eyes glowed with an unearthly brilliance. She looked straight at Sophie and Liam, her expression unreadable.
“Who… who are you?” Sophie managed to ask, her voice barely above a whisper.
The woman tilted her head slightly, as if studying them. When she spoke, her voice echoed like it came from the depths of the lake itself.
“I am Eliza Harper.”
Liam let out a strangled sound that might have been a gasp or a scream. Sophie’s heart pounded in her chest.
“You’re alive?” Sophie asked.
“Alive?” Eliza’s voice was tinged with sadness. “No. Not in the way you understand. But my time here is not yet done.”
Sophie swallowed hard. “What does that mean? What do you want?”
Eliza’s gaze shifted to the lake, then back to Sophie. “The key you carry unlocks more than you realize. It holds the power to awaken what has long been forgotten. But with power comes danger. You must decide whether to continue or turn back.”
“Continue?” Liam blurted out. “Are you kidding me? We don’t even know what’s going on!”
Eliza looked at him, her glowing eyes softening. “Fear is natural, but courage is chosen. You are braver than you believe, Liam Taylor.”
Sophie smirked. “She likes you.”
“Not funny, Sophie!”
“You must make a choice,” Eliza said, her voice cutting through their bickering. “But choose wisely. Once the path is taken, there is no turning back.”
The light around her began to fade, and the water grew still once more. As her figure dissolved, her voice lingered in the air.
“The answer lies in the place where shadows meet the sun.”
When the lake returned to its usual calm, Sophie and Liam stood in silence, staring at the rippling surface.
“The place where shadows meet the sun?” Liam muttered. “What does that even mean?”
“I don’t know,” Sophie admitted, her mind racing. “But I think we’re about to find out.”
And with that, their journey into the unknown truly began.
