CHAPTER FIVE: THE LOVE SHE DIDN’T HAVE TO CHASE

532 Words
Love found her when she stopped looking for it. Not in the way fairytales describe—no dramatic entrance, no instant sparks that felt like fire. It was quieter than that. Softer. Almost easy. And at first… she didn’t trust it. Because she had been used to love that felt like a fight. Love that made her question herself. Love that came with conditions, silence, and confusion. This was different. Too different. There were no mixed signals. No guessing games. No wondering where she stood. And somehow… that scared her more. She caught herself waiting for something to go wrong. Waiting for the energy to change. Waiting for the moment it would start to feel like before. But it didn’t. He didn’t disappear. Didn’t make her feel like she was too much. Didn’t love her only when it was convenient. He showed up. Consistently. Honestly. Gently. And she didn’t know what to do with that at first. Because healing teaches you how to be alone… But it doesn’t always teach you how to be loved. So she struggled. Not with him— But with herself. With the part of her that still believed love had to be earned. With the fear that if she relaxed, it would all fall apart. With the instinct to pull away before she could be hurt again. Old habits don’t disappear overnight. They whisper. They warn. They try to protect you—even when you’re finally safe. There were moments she almost sabotaged it. Moments she wanted to retreat, to create distance, to convince herself that she didn’t need this… didn’t need him. But then she paused. And for the first time— She didn’t run. She stayed. Stayed present. Stayed honest. Stayed open, even when it felt uncomfortable. And slowly, she started to understand something she had never fully believed before: Healthy love doesn’t feel like chaos. It feels like peace. The kind of peace that doesn’t take your voice away. The kind that doesn’t make you doubt your worth. The kind that allows you to be fully yourself… and still be held with care. He didn’t complete her. She had already done that work on her own. But he met her where she was— Whole. And instead of taking from her… He added to her life. Encouraged her dreams. Respected her boundaries. Loved her in a way that felt steady, not overwhelming. And that’s when it finally clicked. This wasn’t the kind of love she used to chase. This was the kind of love she had become ready for. Not perfect. But real. Not intense. But intentional. And for the first time— She didn’t feel like she had to fight to keep it. She just had to receive it. And that… was the hardest part of all. Learning that she didn’t have to prove anything. Didn’t have to overgive. Didn’t have to shrink or bend or lose herself just to be loved. She could just be. And that was enough. More than enough. She used to think love was something she had to run after… Now she knew— The right love doesn’t run. It stays. And this time— So did she.
