Chapter 10: The Edge Of The Hunt

736 Words
The forest was too quiet. Kael knew silence well—it was a predator’s ally, the stillness before a strike. Tonight, though, the hush carried a different weight. The hunters were moving closer. Their patterns were tighter now, less reckless. They were learning the woods, learning him. And worse, Kael could feel their attention drifting toward the village. Toward her. Aria. His claws dug into the earth as he crouched in the shadows of the ridge, golden eyes fixed on the faint glow of Hollowbrook’s lanterns. Smoke curled from chimneys. A dog barked once and was hushed. To any other, it was an ordinary night. But Kael’s instincts throbbed like a drumbeat—danger. Behind him, the pack lingered, restless and questioning. “You grow reckless,” Daren, his second, muttered from the trees. His tone was low, sharp. “These hunts… they are no longer sport. The hunters close in, and yet you linger near the humans. Near her.” Kael bared his teeth, a low rumble slipping from his chest. “Mind your tongue.” Daren didn’t flinch. He’d known Kael too long, fought beside him too often. “You’re letting her weaken you. If the hunters find her, if they use her against you—” Kael turned, eyes blazing. “They will not touch her.” His voice cracked like thunder, leaving no room for argument. But the truth gnawed at him. Daren wasn’t wrong. Every night he told himself to stay away, and every night his steps betrayed him. Drawn to Aria like the moon dragged at the tide, he could not break free. Something in her called to him—fragile, yes, but steady, a quiet strength that unsettled him in ways battle never had. And deep inside, his wolf whispered: Mine. --- Aria, meanwhile, sat by the narrow window of her room, staring at the woods. The village slept, yet she could not. Shadows tugged at her thoughts, whispers threaded through her dreams. For days now, strange things had flickered at the edge of her vision—candles flaring when she walked past, the wind stirring when she grew anxious. Small, inexplicable things. She pressed her palms together in her lap. “What’s happening to me?” she whispered. But no answer came, only the restless rustle of the trees outside. And always, always, that feeling—that someone was out there. Watching. Protecting. Dangerous, but not to her. She should have been afraid. Yet when her eyes drifted toward the dark forest, her chest ached with something else entirely. Longing. --- The hunters’ camp was a scar of iron and fire in the woods. Their leader, Garrick, knelt by a spread of maps, marking Hollowbrook with a blade’s tip. “They’re hiding in the trees,” he growled, voice hard as steel. “But they’re tethered here. Something binds the beasts to this place. A weakness we can exploit.” One of the younger hunters leaned forward. “The villagers? Or… the girl?” Garrick’s smile was a cruel thing. “Exactly. Fear makes the best bait.” --- The night broke open with a cry. Kael snapped his head toward the village—the sound sharp, human, terrified. His body moved before thought could form, muscles surging as he tore through the underbrush. The pack followed a few steps before halting; they knew better than to chase him when the frenzy was upon him. The scent hit him first: smoke, fear, and the acrid stench of silver. Hunters. Lanterns flared in Hollowbrook’s square. Shouts rang out. Villagers stumbled from their doors in confusion as Garrick’s men strode through, blades glinting, torches raised. They weren’t hunting wolves tonight—they were making a point. Intimidation. Control. And in the chaos, Kael saw her. Aria stood at the edge of the square, eyes wide, clutching her shawl. She was frozen, caught between running and staying. One of the hunters’ gazes lingered on her too long, his grin curling with recognition. Something in Kael snapped. His body blurred into motion, instincts howling, the bond between them roaring to life like fire in his veins. He knew he was crossing a line—exposing himself, risking everything. But the thought of their hands reaching for her… it was unbearable. Mine. Protect. And with a snarl that split the night, Kael leapt into Hollowbrook, no longer a shadow, but a storm unleashed.
