Like many corporations, Brynner & Sons had been lagging in this department, not out of any genuine malice but a combination of ineptitude, inexperience, and sheer thoughtlessness. To make up for this, the company went into overdrive to appease the gods of political correctness, sacrificing the hope of genuine talent for the prospect of any minority hire. Soon it was quietly but roundly rumored that managers would be given bonuses for every such signee.
“What do they think, we’re stupid?” Lowell huffed. “Like this is going to bridge centuries of abuse.”
