Chapter 13
Nanette Moretto Spencer did indeed die in her season, on April 7, a few weeks short of her forty-fifth birthday. Jade came home from work one night to find Mrs. S. and Thereza sitting silently at the kitchen table, and he knew, he just knew in the way you know things without knowing.
He did not go to Ground Zero that night or the next or the night after that. Rather he sat silently with Mrs. S.
“I will not be going to the funeral tomorrow,” she said on that third night.
He nodded as if he understood that from the beginning.
“I have said my goodbyes.”
She paused for a moment.
“She was, I think, a woman of grace and courage. I—
“Forgive me,” she said, composing herself. “But it is not natural that one such as I should survive when others have gone before.”
She rose to go
