Part 3: The Common Past

The way his eyes crinkled when he laughed, the taste of his whiskey-laced breath, the way he touched her so tenderly yet with such command. It all came rushing back, and she realized that this wasn't the first time they had been in this exact position. They had been here before, in a hotel room just like this one, after a night of drinking and revelry in Vegas. They had made a drunken pact, a vow that she had hoped was forgotten by morning's light. But it wasn't. They were married, and she had no idea how she had let it get this far without remembering. Pete looked up at her, a puzzled expression on his face. "Katie," he whispered, his voice thick with desire. "What's wrong?" She stared at him, the gravity of the situation crashing down around her. "I remember," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We're married." The color drained from his face, and he took a step back, his hand dropping from her chest as if it had been burned. "Wha- what?" he tried not to stutter. "You're...my wife?" The room spun as the reality of the situation set in. They had both been living separate lives, blissfully unaware of the connection that bound them. The one-night stand in Vegas hadn't just been a wild, drunken fling; it had been the start of something so much more complicated. "I... I don't know what to do," she said, her voice shaking. Pete's eyes searched hers, a mix of shock and confusion. "Neither do I," he admitted. They stood there, naked and vulnerable, staring at each other as the implications of their forgotten union began to sink in. This wasn't just about passion or attraction; it was about two people who had unknowingly made a lifelong commitment to each other. The silence stretched on, taut as a bowstring ready to snap. And at that moment, Katie realized that their lives were about to change in ways she could never have anticipated. Pete was the first to move, pulling his shirt back over his head. He was silent, still in his thoughts. The muscles in his arms flexed as he dressed, his movements jerky and erratic. Katie couldn't help but watch him. She bit her lip and swallowed hard. Pete is undeniably hot. Her mind raced with the sudden realization that she was married to the most eligible bachelor in the office. She mentally shook her head. It was not the right time to be thirsty. There's a much more complication they need to deal with. She quickly followed suit, slipping her clothes back on, her mind reeling. How could she face him tomorrow? How could she look at him and pretend like nothing had changed when they worked closely? The ride home was a blur, the city lights a haze outside the taxi window. Katie's thoughts swirled like a tornado, picking up every memory and emotion she had shoved aside for almost a year now. She had been so focused on her job, so determined to prove herself to the new CEO, that she had completely forgotten about the wild night in Vegas. And now here she was, married to him.
