Chapter Five - Media Whispers, Vanessa Returns

1630 Words
Arielle Brooks knew something was wrong the moment Lucas burst into the kitchen waving his phone like a man who had just discovered fire. "Congratulations," he announced. "You're famous." Ari blinked, mid-bite of toast. "I'm... what?" He handed her the phone. There, splashed across a glossy celebrity news site, was a blurry photo of Damian stepping out of his building. And right beside him—her. Hair tied back. Carrying a grocery bag. Looking like a very confused supporting character in a billionaire's movie. The headline read: CROSS SEEN WITH MYSTERY WOMAN — WEDDING BELLS OR SECRET DEAL? Ari slowly put the phone down. "Oh," she said. "That's unfortunate." Damian entered at that moment, as if summoned by chaos. Lucas turned the phone toward him. Damian read the headline. His face didn't change. But his jaw tightened slightly. "Security will handle it," Damian said. Ari folded her arms. "Your solution to everything is 'someone else will handle it,' isn't it?" Damian met her gaze. "It usually works." Ari sighed. "Well, until 'someone else' shows up in Savannah asking my mama if I'm marrying a stranger." Lucas whispered, "Please let that happen. I need that chapter." Damian ignored him. Later that afternoon, Damian called Ari into his office. "The media cannot know the truth," he said. "Not yet. It would cause speculation about the heir." Ari nodded. "I understand privacy. But I'm not going to be treated like a secret shame." Damian leaned back in his chair. "What do you propose?" Ari thought for a moment. "Let them think I'm your assistant." Lucas snorted from the couch. "Worst assistant ever. She doesn't even carry his coffee." Ari smirked. "Exactly. Very mysterious." Damian considered it. "Acceptable," he said. Ari smiled. "One more thing." Damian lifted an eyebrow. "If I'm going to be your mysterious assistant," Ari said, "you have to at least pretend I exist in public." Damian's lips twitched. "I can do that." It sounded like a man agreeing to extreme sports. That evening, Ari stood on the balcony, city lights glittering around her. She wasn't supposed to be in the spotlight. She wasn't supposed to matter outside this contract. But the world had noticed her. And something told her this was only the beginning. *** Arielle Brooks had learned, over the last few weeks, that billionaire life was like living inside a snow globe: beautiful, pristine, and completely unyielding to chaos—until someone shook it violently. Today, the snow globe shattered. It happened at ten-thirty in the morning, when the elevator doors opened with that slow, deliberate swoosh, and in stepped a woman whose name Arielle had been warned about before even signing the contract: Vanessa Cole. Vanessa, the former socialite darling, the almost-fiancée, the woman Damian had allegedly "moved past" years ago. Tall, blonde, with hair that looked like it had been photoshopped before birth and a smile so perfect it hurt. She had designer heels that clicked across the penthouse marble floors like a drumroll announcing doom. "Damian!" she purred, arms wide in a welcoming-but-threatening embrace. Damian crossed the room in three long strides. His expression was calm, almost serene, as if he were about to lecture someone on corporate mergers rather than being ambushed by a walking i********: filter. "Vanessa," he said evenly, eyes flicking to Arielle before returning to her. Not much, just a fraction. But Arielle noticed. She squared her shoulders. Smile polite but defensive. Southern-bred instinct kicking in. "Hello," Ari said. Vanessa's gaze swept over her, the kind of look that could freeze a man mid-breath and leave him wishing for a snowstorm. Then it settled back on Damian, lingering, dripping with history. "Well, well," Vanessa said lightly, as if she were judging a painting she didn't particularly like. "So this is the famous penthouse project I've heard whispers about?" Ari realized immediately that Vanessa had done her homework. Not that she cared; she wasn't about to bow to intimidation. Damian gestured toward the couch. "Vanessa, have a seat." Vanessa, ever the drama queen, tilted her head. "Sit? Are we having tea, Damian? Or are you actually conducting business today?" Lucas, ever the instigator, snorted from behind a glass table. Ari shot him a warning glance. Damian didn't even twitch. "We're here for a meeting," he said evenly. "Nothing more." Vanessa's brow arched. "A meeting. How... professional of you." She turned her attention to Ari. "And you must be the... assistant? Or is it nanny? Or... surrogate?" Ari's smile tightened. "I'm the woman working with Damian, yes." Vanessa's eyes narrowed. "Working with him. Interesting phrasing." She leaned slightly forward, deliberately invasive. "I hope you understand the position you've stepped into." Ari swallowed. She had expected a challenge, but Vanessa radiated something more dangerous than arrogance. Confidence mixed with entitlement, seasoned with a very particular kind of charm that could convince someone to hand over their firstborn if it weren't for legal contracts. Damian, meanwhile, stayed calm. Always calm. The human equivalent of steel—polished, sharp, and unbendable. "I assure you," he said evenly, "no position is being threatened. This is purely a courtesy visit." Vanessa smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "A courtesy visit. How sweet. But tell me, Damian... do you always keep your courtesies so... secretive?" Ari noticed the slight twitch of Damian's jaw. Just enough to show irritation. Not anger. But irritation. "You should come back another time, Vanessa," Ari said carefully, testing herself. "I believe today is meant for business." Vanessa tilted her head again, blonde hair cascading over her shoulder. "Is it?" she asked. "Because from where I'm standing... it looks like you're interfering with a very personal project." Ari felt the faintest heat in her cheeks. "I'm not interfering. I'm part of the agreement." Vanessa laughed softly, a sound that reminded Ari too much of wind through glass. "Oh, I know. I just... hope you realize the magnitude of being in this man's life. Not many women get to be... so close." Damian's eyes flicked toward Arielle, then back to Vanessa. "Close," he said flatly, "does not mean permanent." Vanessa's smile tightened, turning predatory. "Of course. Temporary arrangements are always so... convenient, aren't they?" Ari could feel the tension coiling in the room like a spring. Lucas, now leaning casually against the piano, whispered, "Ah, yes. The drama queen has entered the building. Popcorn, anyone?" Ari gave him a look. He grinned innocently. Damian's voice cut through the awkward tension. "Vanessa, we are not here to debate contracts or history. I would appreciate it if your visit were brief and courteous." Vanessa's eyes softened for a fraction of a second. A flicker. Then she leaned forward slightly, conspiratorial. "You always were stubborn, Damian. I suppose some things never change." Ari had to bite her lip. She had a sense that Vanessa's words carried more than nostalgia—they were tests, digs, warnings. "Shall we continue?" Damian asked, clearly done. Vanessa sighed dramatically. "I suppose so." They all moved to the living room sofa. Ari took the seat across from Damian, trying not to make it obvious that she felt like she was on stage in a very high-stakes play. Vanessa, of course, assumed the center position, legs crossed, leaning back like she owned the space. "Let's discuss business then," Damian said, maintaining his calm. "This is purely procedural. Vanessa, you are welcome to stay for information only." Vanessa tilted her head, lips pursed. "Procedural. Yes, I remember that word." She leaned forward. "But let me ask you this, Damian... have you ever considered what happens when temporary arrangements become... inconvenient?" Ari blinked. Damian's jaw tightened ever so slightly. "I deal with inconvenience every day," he said evenly, "and I handle it accordingly. There is no further discussion needed." Vanessa smiled, a little tighter, a little sharper. "We shall see. People change, Damian. Even the most... controlled ones." Ari felt an itch of unease. Vanessa had just planted a seed, and it was growing fast. She wasn't just beautiful or entitled—she was smart, manipulative, and knew exactly how to unsettle Damian Cross. Lucas leaned over to Ari. "Rule number one," he whispered. "Never underestimate exes with hair like that." Ari smiled faintly, though her stomach twisted. "Noted." The meeting ended with a polite nod from Damian and a very deliberate, lingering gaze from Vanessa. She left as suddenly as she had arrived, clicking up the elevator, leaving behind a subtle sense of tension, like perfume that clung long after the person was gone. Ari let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "You okay?" Damian asked. "Yes," she said quickly, though her hands trembled slightly. "Just... adjusting." Damian studied her. There was that faint twitch in his jaw again. He didn't speak, just walked to the window, gazing out at Manhattan with his usual steel-gray eyes. Ari knew that look. He was thinking. About her. About Vanessa. About... control. Lucas appeared behind her. "Don't worry, Ari. You survived the hurricane. You'll survive the sequel." Ari laughed quietly, though she felt the weight of the day pressing in. Vanessa's presence was more than a visit—it was a reminder that Damian's life was complicated, guarded, and full of history she could never erase. And yet... for the first time, Ari realized that she wasn't just a contract, or a surrogate, or an outsider. She was starting to matter. To herself, to him, in ways she didn't fully understand yet. That night, Ari sat on the balcony, the city lights twinkling below. She thought about Vanessa, Damian, Lucas, and herself. She thought about how unpredictable this arrangement had become. She sighed and whispered to herself, "I hope I'm ready for this." And somewhere inside the penthouse, Damian thought the same thing. About Ari.
