Chapter 12: One Time Thing

2179 Words
When we all retired to the cafeteria after our shift we found that there were cooked meals waiting for us. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was provided for us but I only managed to get dinner. Jamie, Dean and I sit at a table in the corner before Jake joins us to inform us that two on call rooms are available for us to sleep in, the boys would be taking one and the girls can take the other one. I don't know much about Sadie but judging from the looks she's throwing Jamie, I can already tell she's friends with Lawson. Jamie lets out a groan and I nod at his words, Dean isn't too happy to share a room with James and I don't blame him. He's determine to go find another on call room and sleep there for the night. "You never told me you were dating Kirsten." I say from behind the shower curtain as Jamie and I decide to take a shower before bed. She's in there taking a shower while I slip on my yoga pants. "You never asked." She's right, I didn't ask because I barely knew anything about her. "How do you know?” She questions and I begin to think of an excuse instead of telling her about Lucas and I. I am quite for too long and she pulls the shower curtain back before giving me a suspicious look while wrapping her towel around her. "Or you could just not tell me." I slip my t-shirt over my head and give her a look. "You can't tell anyone." I whisper and she nods. "Lucas told me." Her eyes widen in shock and a blush makes it's way to my cheeks. "You and Luke?" She asks with a raised brow. "Something like that, it's new so keep your mouth shut." I warn and she rolls her eyes before giving me a nod. "Who would have thought Madison Evans would give into Lucas Parker." She teases and I give her a shove before I begin to look for my moisturizer. Later that night when both Jamie and I are in bed Sadie slips in sometime before nine and it does not take a rocket scientist to know that she was with the boys. She doesn't say anything to either of us, she just slips into bed and turns her back to us. My phone buzzes just as Jamie bids me goodnight and closes her eyes. I slip out of the room in my socks and find an available chair down the hall, just so my voice doesn't disturb anyone. "Hello." I say into the speaker with a smile on my face. "Hello beautiful." Lucas’ voice comes from the other end. "How's night one at the hospital?" He asks and I let out a groan. "It's fine, just not what I pictured my next three days to be like." I cross my legs and lean my head back against the wall. It feels good to hear his voice after the day I've had. "Some man and his wife's meth lab exploded and set an entire apartment building on fire." I say and he hisses from the other end. "That doesn't sound good." He sounds like he's in a small space and that makes me wonder if he's in his office at The Saffron. "It wasn't. How was your day?" I change the topic and try not to remember Kylie crying because she didn't want to leave her dad. "It was fine. Just work." He pauses for a second before continuing. "Now tell me love, what are you wearing?" I let out a soft laugh at his words. We spend a good ten minutes talking on the phone, more like him being a pervert and me telling him to step down. I'm walking back down the hall back to the bedroom when I see Sadie slip out of the room, I hide behind a wall as she turns back to see if anybody is watching. She walks three doors down to another on call room and slips inside and I begin to wonder what on earth is she up to? The next morning I wake up to Jamie's phone alarm and we slip out the bathroom and head to the cafeteria for breakfast. Sadie returned back to the room sometime after one in the morning, I'm a light sleeper so I heard her shut the door behind her when she came back in. She woke up the next morning before Jamie's alarm could go off and her bed was made by the time Jamie and I could wake up. "Sadie sneaked out of the room last night. She was gone for like 4 hours." I tell Jamie and she gives me a curious look as we step into the cafeteria. Dean is sitting at the table with a smile on his face as the two of us take a seat across from him with our breakfast. "Come here." Jamie leans across the table and Dean leans forward. She pulls the collar of his scrubs down and purple bruises litter his pale skin. My eyes widen in shock and she lets out a soft laugh. "You need some makeup to cover those?" Jamie teases and Dean swats her hand away as he returns back to his seat. "You and Sadie Prince?" I whisper as realization seeps in and Jamie's eyes widen in shock. "Keep it down." Dean pipes and I roll my eyes at his words. "We were just messing around." He whispers and his eyes drift to the table where Sadie sits with James. "In on call rooms? You're disgusting, that's where we sleep." Jamie says and she gives him a glare. "It was a one time thing. You two need to chill." He snaps and I hold my hands up in defence. "Does she know that it was a one time thing because she keeps on looking over at you like she wants to make it a regular thing." Jamie snaps and Dean shrugs his shoulders. "Evans you're with Lawson. Black you're with Andrews." The Chief looks at Jamie and she nods her head. Did the Chief just say that Lawson and I are together? "That leaves Black and Prince. Evans and Lawson can head up to Neuro with Peterson, Black and Andrews to General with Edwards and Prince and Black to Ortho with Brady." He dismisses us all and is gone before anybody can object. Dean gives me a pat on the back and Jamie gives me a sympathetic look. "You're ready Evans?" James questions and I nod as we both head up to Neuro. The first few hours went by quickly because we were doing our morning rounds and barely saw each other. However, I was coming back from the cafeteria when I noticed James slip into the supply room. I knew it was a bad idea but I followed him in anyways, I was hiding behind one of the shelves when I saw him dusting down a shelf in the opposite direction and placing down some white powder. My eyes widen in shock when he removes his key card and begins to slice thin lines. He snorts all four lines one after the other and wipes his nose before slipping out of the room without looking back. I spend an extra five minutes in the room thinking about what I saw, I know I should report him but I also know that I have no way of providing proof of what I just saw. The three days went by quicker than we expected. Jamie and James were never put into the same group and she was thrilled about that. On our last day there Saxton was impressed by our behaviour and when we were sent home that evening he gave us each a nod. Which to us meant that nobody would be getting fired come Monday morning. This weekend was my weekend on call with Dean and Sadie, which meant I had to work with two adults who were giving each other flirtatious looks and constantly thinking about having s*x. When Jamie, Dean and myself step out at six in the evening on Friday I see a familiar sleek black car parked out front. The last time I spoke to Lucas was on my first night here, I haven't heard from him since. We did text occasionally, but our busy schedules enabled us from having a conversation. He's standing outside, leaning against the passengers side door with his arms crossed against his chest. He's wearing a pair of black jeans and a black sweater, his hair is pulled back and he looks too gorgeous to be true. His eyes meet mine and my insides turn, I haven't seen him for an entire three days and I'm not going to lie about missing him. However, part of me knows that should anybody see him at this hospital right now then that means I am screwed. "You guys go ahead without me." I say to Jamie and Dean. Dean's eyes meet Lucas and he gives me a questioning look. "You sure?" He asks and Jamie grabs his arm and pulls him away. "Of course she's sure, you think she wants to sit in your Toyota Corolla instead of seeing her man?" I let out a laugh at Jamie's words as she leads Dean to his car. He gives me one last wave and I wave them both off as I walk over to Lucas. "What are you doing here?" I ask with a smile as he takes my duffel bag from me and throws it into his backseat. "I wanted to fetch you." He turns around and captures my lips with his. I moan against his lips because three days has been way too long for my liking. He pulls away and offers me a small smile, I can instantly tell that something is wrong. "Now you're going to show me who James Lawson is so I can have a few words with him because I am sure that if he's giving Jamie a hard time at work the he's the one who left those bruises on your wrist." My eyes widen in shock and he doesn't need for me to confirm it vocally because the look on my face is all the confirmation he needs. "No, Lucas. It's nothing." I say as I grab his face and meet his blazing hazel brown eyes. He's angry and I don't trust him to do anything good when he's angry. "Is that him?" He asks as his eyes move from me to behind me. I turn around to see Jake walking out with Lawson and before I can say anything else, Lucas is gone. He's headed towards the direction of Jake and James and both their smiles drop when they see him walking towards them. He grips James by the collar of his jacket and slams him against the wall. My eyes widen and James bag drops to the floor as his blue eyes look from Lucas to me. Jake manages to pull Lucas off James just in time and I rush over to grab Lucas by his sweater. His eyes are filled with rage and they are set on James, who tries to shove Jake off him. "You touch her one more time and I will break both your hands." Lucas yells and James is ready to attack him but Jake grabs him and pulls him away. "Lucas." I snap and his eyes meet mine. "You can't just attack him like that." I say and he closes his eyes before letting out a breath and turning around. "Let's go." He says as he begins to walk to his car with me following behind him. I pull open the door to the back seat and grab my duffel bag and purse. “I'm not going anywhere with you. I'll take a cab home." I spin around and walk off. He grabs my wrist and spins me around to face him. His eyes soften and I understand why he was upset, but that doesn't mean he can beat Lawson up. "You can't do that. You can't walk around attacking people like that." I say. "I asked you what happened and you lied to me Madison. I found out from Kirsten and I'm not an i***t, I know it was him. You need to do me a favour and stop lying to me." He grabs both my hands in his and brings it to his lips. "If someone hurt you, you need to tell me. I care about you and I don't want anything to happen to you." He whispers and just like that my anger has vanished. "You can't protect me from everything." I say with a soft smile. "I can at least try." He brings his lips down to meet mine and everything that happened in the last five minutes evaporates from my mind. I like to call it the Lucas Parker effect.
