Elena did not call Maxwell back right away. She sat in her car for several minutes, staring at Camille's message until the screen dimmed on its own. Her hands felt cold even though the afternoon sun was coming through the windshield. She kept thinking about what could possibly have her name on it inside Julian's house, something Camille was not supposed to see. She finally called Camille instead of texting. "What did you find?" Elena asked as soon as Camille picked up. "I was looking for my prenatal folder," Camille said, her voice low, like she was trying not to be heard. "Julian keeps some of my medical paperwork in his home office because I don't have a permanent address right now. I opened the wrong drawer and found a folder with your name on the tab. Elena Ashford, Personal File." "What's inside it?" Elena asked. "I only had a few seconds before I heard him coming down the hall," Camille said. "But I saw photos. Some from years ago, some more recent. And a few pages that looked like notes, dates, times, places. I didn't get to read them properly." Elena felt her stomach drop. She had spent eight years believing Julian barely paid attention to her daily life outside of what she did for him. The idea that he had been keeping a file on her, quietly, without her knowledge, did not match the version of him she thought she understood. "Did he see you looking at it?" Elena asked. "No, I closed the drawer in time," Camille said. "But Elena, this doesn't feel like something a husband keeps by accident. It felt organized. Like someone had been building it for a while." Elena sat with that thought for a moment, watching a group of kids ride their bikes past her parked car, unaware of anything happening around them. She tried to think clearly instead of reacting. "I need you to get back into that file," Elena said. "Take pictures if you can. I don't care if it takes a few days. I need to know exactly what he's kept and why." "I'll try," Camille said. "But he's been staying closer to the house lately. I don't know if I'll get another chance before he notices something is different about me." After the call ended, Elena drove straight to the Sinclair Group office instead of going home. Maxwell was in a meeting when she arrived, so she waited in the small reception area, going over the conversation in her head. She thought about the years she spent believing Julian's attention was entirely on his own career, not on watching her. If he had been keeping notes on her, it raised a question she had not considered before: had this marriage always been what she thought it was, or had Julian been managing her the same careful way he managed everything else that served his interests. When Maxwell finally came out, he could tell from her expression that something had changed since their last call. "Tell me what she said," he said, leading her into his office and closing the door behind them. Elena repeated what Camille had described, the folder, the photos, the notes with dates and locations. Maxwell listened without interrupting, his expression harder to read than usual. "Does any of that sound like something a lawyer would keep for a client, not a husband?" Elena asked. "Could this be Voss's doing instead of Julian's?" "It's possible," Maxwell said. "Men like Voss keep files on everyone connected to a client, especially a spouse, in case a divorce or a lawsuit ever puts something like that to use. If Julian anticipated needing leverage against you one day, this could be exactly that kind of preparation." "Leverage for what?" Elena asked. "I never gave him a reason to think I'd fight him on anything. I supported everything he did for eight years." "Maybe that's exactly why," Maxwell said. "If he always planned to end the marriage on his terms, eventually, he may have wanted something ready in case you ever pushed back the way you're pushing back right now." Elena sat down slowly, absorbing what that meant. It suggested Julian's affair with Camille was not simply a mistake that spiraled out of control. It suggested a version of him that had been quietly preparing for this outcome long before she ever opened that bedroom door. "I need to see what's in that file," Elena said. "Not just for the case against him. I need to know how long he's been planning around me instead of with me." Maxwell nodded slowly. "Then we wait for Camille to get those photos. In the meantime, I still want you to think about approaching Priya. If there's a copy of anything related to that file sitting in Voss's records as well, she may be the only way we get to it safely." Elena looked down at her hands, still slightly unsteady from the conversation with her sister. "This is starting to feel less like a divorce and more like uncovering something Julian built around me without me knowing." "That's exactly what it is," Maxwell said. "Which means the more we find, the more careful we both need to be. If he's been preparing this long, he won't take losing control of it quietly."
