The Arrangements.

~ Lucien ~ "The notification just hit the secure server, sir. It’s a direct inquiry for 'L'." Marcus didn’t look up from his tablet. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my office, his silhouette sharp against the city’s glowing grid. I didn’t need to ask who it was. The timing was too perfect, the air in the room suddenly too heavy. "Is it her?" I asked, my voice grating against the quiet. "The IP address is routed through a boutique hotel downtown. One owned by the Vale family holdings," Marcus confirmed. He turned the screen toward me. "The request is specific. Tonight. 9:00 PM. Room 402. The message is short: "Bring nothing but yourself." I stared at the black square on my own monitor—my own profile. I had built this identity to move through the world of the elite like a ghost, a tool for gathering the kind of leverage that balanced sheets couldn't provide. I had used it a dozen times to dismantle men just as arrogant as Adrian Vale. But this felt different. "She’s moving faster than we anticipated," Marcus said, his brow furrowed. "Usually, a woman in her position spends weeks oscillating between guilt and anger before she actually reaches out. She’s only had twelve hours." "She’s not 'usually,'" I snapped. I stood up and walked to the window, looking down at the street level. Adrian Vale had spent years convincing that woman she was a ghost in her own life. He had suggested an open marriage as a way to further humiliate her, never dreaming she would actually walk through the door he’d left unlocked. I picked up my phone, my thumb hovering over the 'Decline' button. "Decline it," I muttered. Marcus paused. "Sir?" "I said decline it. I’m already in the middle of a hostile takeover of her husband’s infrastructure. I have his debt, I have his board members in my pocket, and I have the evidence of his embezzlement ready to leak. This... this is a complication I don't need." It was a lie. The complication wasn't the mission; it was the way my heart had reacted when I saw her standing by that pillar at the gala. It was the way she looked when she realized her own history had been stolen and gifted to a mistress. If I walked into that hotel room, I wouldn't be Lucien Blackwood, the man destroying Adrian Vale. I would be 'L', a man she bought to fix a hole in her soul. "If you decline, she'll just pick the next profile on the list," Marcus said evenly. "There are men on that site who won't care about her dignity. They'll see a wealthy, hurting woman and they'll bleed her dry. Or worse, they'll be sloppy. If Adrian finds out she hired someone else, he’ll use it to destroy her reputation." I gripped the edge of my desk. Marcus was right. If I didn't step in, she was a lamb walking into a den of much hungrier wolves. But if I did step in, the line between my revenge and my desire would vanish. "She’s a target, Lucien," Marcus reminded me, his voice dropping. "Don't let the marks become the mission." "I know exactly what she is," I growled. I thought about the way Adrian had gripped her arm. I thought about the necklace. A man like Adrian didn't deserve a woman like Seraphina, and he certainly didn't deserve to win this game. If I took this assignment, I could control the narrative. I could protect her from herself while I burned him to the ground. I sat back down and pulled the keyboard toward me. "She thinks she's hiring a service," I said, more to myself than to Marcus. "She thinks she's buying a moment of rebellion. I’ll give her exactly what she asked for. I’ll be the professional. I’ll gather the intel from the source, and I’ll ensure she doesn't do something stupid that gives Vale the upper hand." "And the physical aspect of the contract?" Marcus asked, his eyes unblinking. "The 'L' profile doesn't have a reputation for just talking, sir." I felt a tightening in my chest, a cold, hard knot of resolve. "I’m a professional, Marcus. I’ve gone undercover in worse places than a luxury hotel suite. I can handle a woman who’s looking for a way to hurt her husband." I hit the 'Accept' key. The screen flashed: "COMMUNICATION ESTABLISHED." I looked at the time. 7:15 PM. I had less than two hours to transform. I needed to shed the billionaire, the predator, the vengeful ghost. I needed to become the man who could stand in a room with Seraphina Vale and not let her see the fire behind my eyes. "Get the car," I commanded. "The black sedan. No security detail at the hotel. I’ll go in through the service entrance." "Lucien," Marcus said, stopping me at the door. "One mistake, one slip of the tongue, and you lose the entire Vale acquisition. If she finds out who you are before he’s broken, she’ll turn on you. She won't see a savior. She'll see another man using her." "She won't find out," I said, my voice like flint. "Tonight isn't about me. It’s about her. I’m going to give her the one thing Adrian never could—a choice." I walked out of the office, the adrenaline starting to coat my nerves. I told myself it was for the job. I told myself it was the most efficient way to secure the final pieces of the puzzle. I told myself I could stay objective. I got into the back of the car and watched the city blur past. My mind kept returning to the image of her neck, bare and vulnerable. "One night. I’ll keep it clean. I won't touch what I want."
