We remained silent as the elevator carried us to the floor where Arthur's office was located. It seemed to be one of the top floors, high enough to offer a commanding view through the windows. The young man next to me said nothing but wore a soft smile on his lips. He seemed pleased, maybe even smug, at having been the hero of the day. Had I not been so desperate, I surely would have refused his help and left with my dignity intact.but it was too late for that. "I think Arthur is in a meeting," he remarked, glancing at his wristwatch, an older model that looked almost vintage. "But I’ll let his secretary know you’re here." "Oh, please, don’t do that!"
