chapter 3: Perilous partnerships

1619 Words
Eva was seated at the edge of the luxurious bed in the guest suite of Diego's large mansion, gazing out of the window. Looking at the beautiful gardens did not help soothe her frantic thoughts. She was now Mrs. Diego Valdez, officially tied to the man who had previously broken her heart, all in order to protect her brother. The wedding was brief and impersonal, with just a small audience, and now the arranged marriage had officially begun. She let out a deep sigh, sensing the gravity of her choice settling in. Entering Diego's mansion was akin to entering hostile territory. All aspects of this location exuded luxury, while also emanating a sense of secrecy, power, and peril. She was merely a visitor in Diego's world, a tool in his plan. Eva got to her feet and made her way to the vanity table, attempting to divert her attention. The tastefully furnished room seemed unfamiliar, even oppressive. checking her reflection in the mirror, she scarcely acknowledged the woman staring back at her. Today, she lost something important - her freedom, her sense of self. Nevertheless, she had to keep in mind that all of this was for the sake of Javier. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door, and Diego entered before she could respond. "I notice you're getting comfortable," he remarked, his voice as polished and strategic as ever. Eva crossed her arms and looked away from the mirror to meet his gaze. I don't think it's settling. This is not a place of residence. "It's a jail." Diego's mouth formed a small grin, but his eyes remained unaffected. "You always have the option to depart." However, we are aware that this is not a possibility, especially when your brother's future is in jeopardy. Eva tightened her fists, striving to control her emotions. She loathed his correctness. She despised his abundance of power over her. “What is it that you desire, Diego?" she inquired, maintaining a steady voice amid the internal storm. Moving nearer, he focused his eyes on hers. "I need you to grasp something, Eva. This marriage could be considered a legal agreement, but that doesn't mean I have forgotten the love we shared in the past. Eva's breath caught in her throat, but she promptly shook her head. "Diego, what we once had is no longer alive." The day you lied to me was when you destroyed it. Diego's face briefly stiffened, but he soon composed himself. "Believe whatever you want." However, I am not the sole individual harboring secrets. "Soon you will witness it." Diego left the room after making a mysterious remark, leaving Eva even more disturbed. She had zero trust in him, not even a tiny bit. His words simply reaffirmed her suspicions: there was a hidden situation she was involved in. The man did not realise that he was at a high speed when all of a sudden, he lost control of his car, crashing into a tree. The following days went by quickly amidst feelings of confusion and tension. Eva made an effort to steer clear of Diego, yet the mansion seemed like a maze of hidden truths. Whenever she rounded a corner, she always noticed someone whispering on a phone or vanishing behind a closed door. The employees, who were once friendly, now greeted her with distant courtesy, as if they were aware of something she was not. One night, Eva made the choice to investigate the mansion. She had to refresh her mind, and an inner voice urged her to seek out solutions. She had listened to plenty of discreet talks to understand that Diego was not only a rich entrepreneur - he was engaged in something more sinister, something risky. While walking through the lengthy, poorly illuminated corridor, she could hear voices emanating from a room. She knew Diego's deep voice, but there was another person with him. Her curiosity took over, prompting her to silently move closer to the door that was slightly ajar. Diego, a man's voice said, you must control her. "This agreement with the cartel is too crucial to be disrupted by any distractions." Eva felt a chill run through her veins. Is it a cartel? Diego responded, his voice sharp, saying she would not cause any trouble. I will take care of Eva. Your attention is on the agreement. Eva's heart raced in her chest as she moved rapidly away from the door. She needed to leave this place and uncover Diego's secret. She quickly walked through the hallway, her thoughts moving quickly. What sort of agreement was Diego negotiating with the cartel? How was she connected to all of this? While turning a corner, she ran into someone. Eva took a sharp breath, moving away to observe a towering man with striking blue eyes gazing down at her. "He must be Eva," he said, his voice smooth yet unsettling. "Diego's newlywed wife." Eva put on a fake smile, attempting to hide her unease. "Yes, and who are you?" "He said, extending his hand towards Ricardo." "I am a friend of Diego's." Eva paused before clasping his hand, her intuition urging her to be careful. There was something not quite right about Ricardo. He stared at her for too long, and his grin seemed more like a smirk. Ricardo kept his eyes fixed on hers as he mentioned that he was aware of her reputation. Diego thinks very highly of you. Eva's stomach was in turmoil. She disliked the way Ricardo gazed at her, as if he was aware of something unknown to her. "I question that," Eva responded in an attempt to appear casual. “I’m just here for the duration of our agreement.” Ricardo laughed, his eyes sparkling with joy. So, we have a deal? Hopefully, everything goes as planned. Eva's frown deepened as her suspicions escalated. "What precisely are you trying to say with that?" Ricardo said, smiling even wider, "Oh, it's nothing." "Things in Diego's world often don't go according to plan." Before Eva had a chance to reply, Ricardo left, leaving her standing in the hallway, feeling even more confused and unsettled. What was his intention behind that statement? Why did she sense that someone was watching her, observing her every action? The man decided to go for a walk in the park despite the rainy weather. Eva had trouble falling asleep that night. She rolled around in the extravagant bed, her thoughts moving quickly with inquiries. She couldn't rid herself of the belief that she was at risk, that Diego and his colleagues were concealing something larger than she had expected. She couldn't lay in bed any longer, so she got up and silently walked to Diego's office. She had observed him departing earlier that night, and she realized that this could be her sole opportunity to uncover the truth. The room was dimly lit with only the gentle radiance of moonlight entering through the windows. Eva's heart raced in her chest as she neared Diego's desk, her hands shaking as she started going through the drawers. Initially, all she discovered were documents and paperwork connected to Diego's business operations. However, at the bottom of a drawer, she discovered a folder labeled *Confidential* in red. She gasped as she removed it and unfolded it. Contained within were pictures, paperwork, and financial documents. Eva's eyes grew wider as she understood what she was seeing—proof of Diego's connections to the cartel. Diego was seen in photos with menacing individuals, transactions associated with narcotics trade were identified together with payments to corrupt officials. As she flipped through the papers, her heart raced, causing her hands to shake. That was all. This was the evidence she required. However, before she could understand what she was looking at, a voice from behind caused her to stop in her tracks. "Eva, it wasn't meant for you to see that." Eva felt her blood freezing as she turned around slowly, her heart thumping in her chest. Diego stood in the doorway with an inscrutable expression, yet a menacing shine in his eyes. She spoke with a quivering voice. Diego, what is this? Have you been concealing this from me the whole time? Diego entered the room and shut the door. Eva, there are things you do not comprehend. Things that I was unable to communicate to you. Eva felt her heart rate increase as he approached, his gaze fixed on hers the entire time. Are you connected to the cartel? You have deceived me for the entire duration of our time together. Diego did not refuse it. Instead of that, he let out a sigh, his face becoming softer briefly. "I never intended for you to discover in this manner." Eva trembled as she lifted the folder. Diego, you're in serious trouble. "What can you do to include me in this?" Diego's expression turned dark as his voice adopted a chilly tone. "You decided to participate by agreeing to this marriage." Once you are aware of the truth, there is no possibility of returning to the previous state. Eva's heart quickened when she recognized the complete level of danger she was facing. She had believed she could manage Diego, believed she could participate in his game. However, she now comprehended that she was out of her depth. And there was no way out. Diego's voice was low and threatening as he stated, "Now you're involved in this." "If you attempt to flee, you will be sorry for it." Fear took hold of Eva's heart as she gazed at him, causing her breath to catch in her throat. She didn't know how she would survive this situation.
