Chapter 5: The Foe within

1537 Words
Eva remained in her poorly lit room, the night shadows casting long streaks on the walls, enveloping her in obscurity. She still felt her heart racing from the meeting with Ricardo. Just managed to save her life, she couldn't shake the sense that danger was present at every turn. The mansion, formerly grand and graceful, seemed like a jail. What about Diego? He was equally threatening as the forces beyond the gates. Minutes after she fled, Diego burst into the room with a look of intense anger in his eyes, forcefully shutting the door. Quickly, he hurried across the distance separating them, his aura dominating. "What occurred?" Diego insisted, his tone conveying a risky combination of worry and anger. I promised to protect you! Eva's nerves remained tense, but she didn't back down. "Is it secure?" Diego! I almost lost my life. Ricardo came at me aggressively! Diego’s jaw tightened as he walked back and forth in the room, hands raking through his hair in annoyance. He barked out "Ricardo." I will handle him. "He has been crossing the line for an extended period of time." "Exceeding boundaries?" Eva responded with disbelief. You're making it seem as if he indulged in an additional slice of cake! Diego attempted to murder me!" Diego looked at her, his demeanor becoming gentler, while his focus stayed strong. I will make sure that nothing harmful occurs to you, Eva. You must have faith in me. Confidence. That word seemed empty as it hung in the space between them. She was unsure if she could rely on anyone, including Diego, Ricardo, or even herself. Things were spiraling out of hand. She confessed, her voice soft yet resolute, that she was unsure of whom to place her trust in. All of this is false, everything about it. Javier, you belong to the cartel... I'm not sure what to trust now. Diego's expression turned gloomy. I promise, I am not against you. Eva chuckled without humor. Did it not happen? So why do I sense that I am simply a pawn in the complex game you are involved in? Why do I continue discovering additional falsehoods—hidden secrets in every corner of this dwelling? Diego extended his arms, softly holding her shoulders. I am withholding information from you out of necessity. In order to ensure your safety. There are unseen powers in motion that you fail to comprehend, Eva. If you were aware of all things, you would be at a greater risk. She drew away, shaking her head. Diego, I'm already at risk! Can't you perceive that? Ricardo is scheming against you, and I am caught in the middle. I cannot remain seated and expect the following assault. Diego's eyes softened, yet there was a hidden darkness within them. Ricardo has selected his option. "If he's trying to hinder me, I will eliminate him." Eva felt a twisting sensation in her stomach. Diego lived in a world defined by violence, and he couldn't escape the fact that it was a fundamental part of his identity. Despite his constant assurances of wanting to protect her, she couldn't shake off the memory. The days that followed were filled with tension. Eva felt like she was being watched every time she walked through the mansion. She was aware of Diego constantly watching her, yet there was a mysterious feeling surrounding her that she couldn't identify. The employees quieted down as soon as she walked into the room, their whispers fading away. Ricardo had not taken any further action, but Eva was convinced it would not continue for much longer. While Eva delved further into the details of Javier's arrest, clues started to connect together. The corruption extended beyond the Valdez empire, with deeper betrayals involving her own family. She came across papers indicating that a person she trusted had given important details to the officials, leading to Javier being framed for a financial scandal. She felt her heart drop as she looked at the papers scattered in front of her. Is it possible that it is true? Did a member of her family play a role in her brother's downfall? The team quickly adapted to the new project requirements. They efficiently implemented the changes and met all the deadlines. That evening, Eva stealthily made her way into the hallway, determined to discover further information. Diego's intentions regarding how to handle Ricardo were unclear, leading her to feel unable to remain idle. She wanted solutions and suspected Ricardo was keeping information from her. While tiptoeing through the mansion, she ended up standing in front of Ricardo's office yet another time. For a brief moment, she paused, her hand hovering above the doorknob. Is it worth taking the chance of facing another conflict? She had narrowly avoided the initial one. Right at the moment when she was going to move away, the door made a creaking sound and opened. Ricardo had a dark smile on his face as he stood in the doorway. "Searching for something, Eva?" Eva felt her heart race, but managed to maintain her composure. "I desire responses," she stated, her voice unwavering in spite of her fear. I am aware that you are framing Diego. I discovered the USB stick. Ricardo's smile grew bigger, yet it lacked any sense of warmth. Do you believe this is solely about Diego? Eva, you're not getting the complete picture. Diego is not the only one who is unclean. Eva folded her arms, attempting to keep a grip on things. "Then provide me with more information." Ricardo moved nearer, lowering his voice to a whisper. "Do you believe that Diego is the one you should be concerned with?" You are mistaken. Your family is also responsible for shedding blood. Eva squinted her eyes. "What is it that you are discussing?" Ricardo leaned forward, a look of wicked pleasure gleaming in his eyes. We did not set up your brother. The cartel did not betray him. Eva's breath caught in her throat. "Then, who else?" Ricardo's smile contorted, his words piercing deeply. "It was a member of your family." Eva sensed the earth moving below her as she processed the new information. Is there someone from her family? Her mind was filled with racing thoughts, as she couldn't accept the idea while a dark suspicion crept in. "You're not telling the truth," she exclaimed, moving away, her voice shaking with doubt. Why would any member of my family engage in such behavior? "You're attempting to control me, Ricardo." Ricardo softly laughed, keeping his eyes fixed on hers. "Is it me?" Could it be that the individuals you rely on the most also have secrets of their own to safeguard? Consider it, Eva. Who benefited the most from Javier's failure? She thought quickly. The idea of anyone in her family betraying Javier was unimaginable. Who else could it possibly be? For years, there were tensions within the family stemming from unspoken rivalries and hidden agendas. Is it possible that one of them made Javier a scapegoat? Ricardo moved in closer, his voice a hushed murmur. "You've been ignoring the real danger while being focused on Diego and me. Do you believe your brother is behind bars because of my actions? Reconsider your thoughts. Eva felt her stomach churn, her heart racing. She had to leave that place. The mansion's walls seemed to be getting closer, causing her to lose trust in everyone— not Diego, not Ricardo, and not even her own family. However, Ricardo had not finished yet. He moved nearer, his words cutting through her like a knife. "Do you desire to rescue Javier?" You will require protection beyond what Diego can provide. You must determine which family member placed him in that cell. And if you do this, you may not be pleased with the outcome. Eva felt overwhelmed with confusion as Ricardo backed away, a look of cruel satisfaction gleaming in his eyes. He had sown the seed of uncertainty, and now it would grow and spread. She had to resist his influence, yet the anxiety in her stomach was undeniable. The company provides employees with health insurance coverage and paid time off. That night, Eva went back to her room, her mind filled with thoughts. Her life had been completely changed, and she was unsure who to trust now. Diego had his hidden truths, but Ricardo was skilled at manipulation. The thought that someone in her own family may have betrayed Javier sent shivers down her back. Eva was perched on the edge of her bed, gazing at the cryptic flash drive she discovered in Ricardo's office. It could contain the information she required, but she was hesitant about what it might unveil. She trembled as she set it down on the bedside table. The mansion was silent, too silent. Darkness moved slowly on the walls, and the heaviness of the night bore down on her. Eva was aware that she was nearing the truth, however, the danger increased with each step she took. She couldn't trust anyone, not even herself. Her phone vibrated, illuminating the screen with a single message. The call came from a number that was unfamiliar. Do not trust anyone.
