Madeline POV
It had been two hours since Arius left me here alone. I had tried every door and every window in the house, but they all seemed to have some kind of magical barrier against them. I couldn’t even touch the door handle without a volt of electricity painfully shooting up my hand.
I walked into the kitchen and rummaged around looking for a weapon of some kind to protect myself. A knife wouldn’t work. I needed wood. Silver effects werewolves. Wood affects vampires. I found a wooden spoon in one of the drawers and pulled out a knife. I started to hack at it until it had a nice sharp point at the end of the handle. Perfect.
I flopped back down on the sofa, hiding the spoon down the side of the seat, out of sight and took a look around. Nothing had changed. Everything was exactly the same as when Cora and I had left the day we flew to America for the battle against Lucius.
“Oh Cora, I bet you are laughing down on me right now! Mated to your son!” I shouted up at the ceiling. My head snapped at the door as I heard the lock turn and it opened. My heart started pounding as Arius walked into the room, slamming the door behind him. His black hair was more floppy than before, as if he had been doing something active. A few strands fell into his eyes, giving him a youthful appearance. He stopped and looked at me with a blank expression and that’s when I gasped. I could see dried blood all down his neck and chest. Luckily, he was wearing black, but I could tell it was all over him. I stood up abruptly as fear vibrated through me. Did he go back to the pack? Did he hurt them?
“Whose blood is that?” I shouted, my voice quivering at the end. He strolled into the kitchen and pulled a bottle of water out of the fridge before taking large gulps.
“I said whose blood is that?!” My voice was angrier now. More determined. If he had hurt any of my friends... Any of my pack…
He shut the fridge aggressively and leaned his body against the kitchen side, folding his defined arms. “No one that matters.”
“What does that mean? What did you do?” I took fierce steps towards him and his eyes burned into mine, warning me, but I didn’t back down. “I swear to the Goddess, if you hurt any of my friends, I will kill you!” His expressionless face creased into an amused smirk and rage boiled inside me that he found my threat amusing. “What is so funny?”
He uncrossed his arms, stepped towards me so we were toe to toe and looked down from his towering height. He was trying to intimidate me, but I didn’t let him. I kept my feet glued to the spot, even though I wanted to step back.
“I’d just like to know how you plan on killing me?” His tone was full of humour.
I glared up at him and narrowed my eyes, “I am more resourceful than you think.”
His hypnotic eyes sparkled and he chuckled. My core tightened at the beautiful sound as pleasure bubbled inside me. I internally cursed myself. He walked away and headed up the stairs without looking back at me.
“Where are you going?” I shouted up at him.
“To have a shower,” he replied coolly. “Wash all the blood off.”
I stood motionless for a moment wondering what my choices were. I didn’t seem to have many. I didn’t know anything more than I did a few minutes ago. I still don’t know whose blood that was. Where he had been or what he plans to do with me. I ran to the door to see if the magic was gone now that he was back.
“Ah, s**t!” I cursed as my hand burned from the handle. I could only see two ways out of this. Either I kill him or he kills me. I raced over to the sofa and pulled out the wooden spoon, which was now carved into a mini spear. I took a deep breath as I started to climb the stairs. The sound of the powerful shower came from the bathroom and I saw that the door was slightly ajar. I hovered outside as I contemplated what I was about to do. What choice did I have? This was possibly the best opportunity I would have to get rid of him.
I pushed the door open silently and the steam from the room hit me as my eyes adjusted. I swallowed my desire as my eyes roamed my naked mate’s back. My heart tugged when I saw lots of large scars across it in all different directions. His muscles rippled as he rubbed his hands through his hair under the water, unaware of my presence. I took a moment to appreciate how f*****g sexy he was as my eyes fell on his ass and down to his muscular legs. I stepped closer and closer until I was close enough, but he turned rapidly and his eyes widened as he saw what I was holding. My courage faltered slightly as we stared at each other with fierce passion.
Suddenly, he grabbed my upper arms and rammed me against his naked, soaking body under the shower. I gasped and held the spike up against his throat as he gazed intensely into my eyes.
“What’s the plan, Little Wolf? You’re going to kill me?” His voice was deep and raw as he pulled me against him tighter. I could feel every inch of his body against mine as the silk of my dress clung to my curves like a second skin under the cascading water.
“Yes,” I whispered, pushing the spear into him a little more and saw it start to sizzle against his smooth skin. He didn’t react. Instead, he lifted his hand and covered mine holding the spear. He dragged the spear lower down his body, towards his chest. The wood left a burning trail along his skin as my eyes widened at what he was doing. When the sharpest point of the spoon was inline with his chest, he released my hand and I looked up at him confused.
“If you are going to do it, stab me in the heart. It has always been yours to break.” His voice was full of emotion, but his face was still cold and intense.
My own heart fluttered at his words. He wasn’t going to fight me. He wasn’t going to stop me. He was going to let me kill him. He was giving me an out.
My bottom lip quivered as I stared into his eyes and my resolve wavered. Nina was growling in my head, protesting my actions. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t kill my mate no matter who he was. I dropped the spoon and my hand rested on his chest instead.
In a flash, his lips were on mine and his hands were in my wet hair as water glided down our skin and I felt a fire light inside me. His lips were so soft, so inviting. My arms instinctively wrapped around his neck as he deepened the kiss and I felt his tongue enter my mouth, possessing me. Fireworks exploded in my body as the euphoric feeling increased. I had never been kissed like this in my entire life. With so much desire and passion. Suddenly, something in my brain clicked, and I remembered who I was kissing. I broke away abruptly and slapped him across the face. He didn’t react as I ran from the room, leaving a trail of water on the floor. I raced into the nearest bedroom and slammed the door, sliding down it in despair. Wrapping my arms around my knees, a sob escaped my swollen lips. Lips that had been tainted by his and would never be the same.
What was I supposed to do now?
