The safe house was a loft in SoHo—hidden above a closed art gallery, accessible only through a freight elevator that required three separate keys. Lucian had bought it years ago under a shell company, one of dozens of properties he'd acquired for moments exactly like this.
Isabella helped Maya onto a worn leather couch while Lucian secured the perimeter. The loft was sparse but functional—a bed, a kitchenette, a wall of monitors displaying security feeds from the building's cameras.
"We should be safe here," Lucian said, returning from his sweep. "For now."
"For now isn't good enough." Isabella was already at the monitors, her eyes scanning the feeds. "Julian is out there. He knows we're in the city. He's going to find us."
"Not if we find him first."
Maya groaned from the couch, pressing a bag of frozen peas to her bruised cheek. "I hate to be the voice of reason, but how exactly do we find a man who's been evading the FBI for fifteen years?"
"Julian isn't evading," Lucian said. "He's hunting. There's a difference."
"What do you mean?"
"He's not running from us. He's coming for us." Lucian's jaw tightened. "He wants revenge. We took down his operation, exposed his crimes, put him in a cage. He won't rest until we're dead."
Isabella turned from the monitors. "Then we use that. We draw him out."
"That's dangerous."
"Everything we do is dangerous." She met his eyes. "But we have an advantage. We know how he thinks. We know what he wants."
"And what's that?"
"Revenge. And you." She paused. "He's not just coming for me or Maya. He's coming for you, Lucian. You're the one who betrayed him. You're the one who took everything from him."
Lucian was silent for a long moment. Then: "You're right."
"So we use it. We give him a target he can't resist."
"Me."
"Us." Isabella crossed to him, taking his hands. "We do this together. Or not at all."
He stared at her, his grey eyes searching her face. "You could die."
"So could you."
"I've made peace with that."
"Well, I haven't." Her voice cracked. "I didn't survive everything we've been through just to lose you now."
Lucian pulled her into his arms, holding her tight. "You won't lose me."
"Promise me."
"I promise."

They spent the night planning.
Julian Vance was smart, careful, and patient. He'd spent decades building the Vale Group's empire, and he wasn't going to let it crumble without a fight. But he had one weakness—his ego.
"He won't be able to resist gloating," Lucian said, pacing the loft. "He'll want to see my face when he kills me. He'll want to monologue, to explain every detail of his plan, to make sure I understand exactly how thoroughly he's beaten me."
"So we give him that chance," Isabella said. "We set up a meeting. Somewhere public, somewhere controlled. We wire you up, record everything, and when he incriminates himself—"
"We take him down."
"Exactly."
Maya looked up from her laptop. "I can set up a meeting through the dark web channels. Make it look like a ransom demand. Julian's people are still monitoring those networks."
"Do it."
"What location?"
Lucian thought for a moment. "The old Aethelred building. The one they shut down after the scandal. It's abandoned now, but Julian knows it. It's where we first met—where he taught me how to run the company."
"Sentimental," Isabella said.
"Manipulative." Lucian's voice was cold. "He'll think I chose it because I'm weak. Emotional. Easy to manipulate."
"And instead?"
"I'll be waiting."
---
The message was sent at dawn.
By noon, they had a response.
"MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE. OR THE GIRL DIES."
Isabella read the message three times, her heart pounding. "He wants you alone."
"I know."
"You can't go alone."
"I have to." Lucian met her eyes. "If I don't, he'll know it's a trap. He'll disappear, and we'll never find him again."
"So what do we do?"
"We follow the plan." He pulled out a small device—a wireless microphone, barely larger than a grain of rice. "You'll be listening the entire time. If anything goes wrong, you call Agent Reeves. She'll have a tactical team standing by."
"Lucian—"
"I'll be fine." He cupped her face, his thumbs brushing her cheekbones. "I've survived worse."
"I don't want you to get hurt."
"I won't."
"You can't promise that."
He smiled—a real smile, tired but genuine. "I can promise that I'll do everything in my power to come back to you. That's all I have."
Isabella kissed him. Hard. Desperate.
"Come back to me," she whispered against his lips.
"I will."
---
Midnight came too quickly.
Isabella stood in the surveillance van two blocks from the old Aethelred building, her eyes fixed on the monitors. Maya was beside her, tracking the feeds from the cameras Lucian had planted earlier that day.
"He's inside," Maya said. "Camera three."
The screen showed Lucian walking through the abandoned lobby, his footsteps echoing in the silence. He moved carefully, his hand resting on the gun at his hip.
"Where's Julian?"
"Not yet. But he's close—I'm picking up a signal from a vehicle approaching from the east."
Isabella's heart hammered. "Come on, Lucian. Be careful."
The minutes stretched like hours. Lucian reached the central atrium—a vast, empty space with a glass ceiling that showed the stars above. He stopped in the middle, waiting.
Then the doors opened.
Julian Vance stepped inside, flanked by two armed men. He was thinner than he'd been in the news footage, his silver hair disheveled, his eyes wild. But he was still charming—still wearing that avuncular smile that had fooled so many people for so long.
"Lucian," he said, spreading his arms. "My dear boy. How I've missed you."
"I wish I could say the same." Lucian's voice was ice.
"You've caused me a great deal of trouble." Julian walked closer, his footsteps slow and deliberate. "The arrests. The raids. The evidence you so kindly provided to the FBI. You've destroyed everything I spent forty years building."
"You destroyed it yourself." Lucian didn't move. "You killed my parents. You corrupted my father's company. You turned everything he believed in into a weapon."
"Your father was a fool." Julian's smile vanished. "He didn't understand how the world works. He thought he could play by the rules, that he could be honest and honorable and still win. But the world doesn't reward honesty, Lucian. It rewards power."
"And that's what you wanted? Power?"
"I wanted everything." Julian stopped ten feet away, his eyes gleaming. "And I almost had it. Until you."
"You killed my parents." Lucian's voice cracked. "You were my godfather. You held me when I cried at their funeral. And you killed them."
"I did what I had to do." Julian's expression was cold. "Your father was going to expose us. He was going to destroy everything. I couldn't let that happen."
"So you cut his brakes. You sent him off a cliff. You murdered him and my mother and then you pretended to be my family."
"I raised you." Julian's voice softened. "I taught you everything you know. I made you the man you are today."
"You made me a monster."
"No." Julian shook his head. "I made you a survivor. There's a difference."
Lucian's hand moved to his gun. "You're going to pay for what you did."
"Am I?" Julian smiled. "I don't think so. You see, I have something you want."
He snapped his fingers, and the doors opened again.
Two men dragged in a figure—bound, gagged, beaten.
Isabella's heart stopped.
"No," she whispered.
It was Matteo.
