Chapter 18: I'll Save Her

1363 Words
Adrian “s**t!” “s**t!” "You son of a b*tch, Victor." I cursed, slamming the walls of the elevator. I quickly dialed the number I had just cut off; she was the only one to turn to now. “Hello, Sarah." "Where are you, Adrian? Just send me the location, and I'll come meet you now." She sounded urgent. “No, you tell me your location. I'm already leaving the building, and I can't wait for you here.” I replied. It will be better if I meet up with her, and listening to whatever she has to say in my office will slow down the process. “Meet me at the farmhouse cafe downtown. I'll be there in 10." “Alright, I'm on my way now," I replied and ended the call. Dominic's calls kept coming in, but I ignored them all; he was bent on stopping me from going to Ravenwood, which is the opposite of what I'm about to do. I can't let Ella face the same fate her mother faced. “No! No! No! f**k. I left my keys in the office,” I screamed, staring at my wristwatch. "I can't go back up; that would take another 20 minutes. Damn!” I decided to take a taxi, which wasn't entirely the best decision, but I had to move. “You're late," Sarah said, sipping her coffee across the table. "I faced a setback; sorry about that.” "So what were you saying earlier over the phone? Who's in trouble this time?" "Ella Deveraux. She's an artist.” "So, what about her?” "Well, it's a long story, but to cut a long story short, she'll be shipped off against her will to a buyer in less than 4 hours. Victor is in charge of the whole plan.” "Victor Dane?" Her eyes suddenly lifted. “Yes, Victor Dane. He's involved in human trafficking, Sarah. Ella is not the only one involved. “Hmmm. Adrian… I think this is complicated.” "Complicated? How? Come on, Sarah, I've been tracking this for some time now, and all you have to say is that it's complicated?” "Look, Adrian, I would love to help but…" “But what, Sarah? You can't help mobilize your men? You didn't even let me provide the full details, and you're already backing out?” I flared but still maintained my low tone so I don't attract onlookers. "Victor Dane has insiders, Adrian. Going against him is like declaring war on yourself. I can't risk that, not now, not when the evidence is not fully ready.” "I have all the evidence you need; all you have to do is just give the order, Sarah.” "Just let this slide, Adrian. We need more than what you claim you have as evidence.” "But I can't, Sarah. People are in danger as we speak. “My hands are tied, Adrian; I wish there was a way,” she said, standing up to leave. "Victor’s web is more than you think, and I don't advise you meddling in his territory, Adrian.” "Is that a no?” "Get some rest, Adrian. Just let the sleeping dog lie for now. I've got to go now; duty calls.” She said as she attended to her buzzing phone. "One more thing," she turned to me. Don't do anything stupid, Adrian." I’ve known Sarah for a few months now, if not a year. I once helped fasten up one of the investigations she was involved in that would have made her lose her job. She had come to me amid tears to help look into the case. When I looked into the files, it was a case of not just job loss but life and death. We had immediately swung into action to detect the setup, which was highly technical and almost impossibly traceable. But with my team, our knowledge, and tech, we tracked the 26-year-old nuisance down. He was her college ex, and he cooked up fake reports against her just to get back at her for leaving him; unbelievable. Since then, she feels she's highly indebted to me and has never failed to come through. For her to refuse digging into this case means Victor's hands are way more than dirty. I stared at my wristwatch the moment she stepped out. Ella will be shipped out in less than 3 hours. I had just 3 hours to draft a plan, but guess what, known was coming. Absolutely nothing. Dominic wasn't willing to help, and neither was Sarah. I looked out through the tall window of the cafe, and the only thought that ran through my mind as I stared at the yellow long bus across the street was to go all in. Now I regret leaving my car behind. I walked out of the cafe and stopped the nearest available taxi. “Ravenwood." "Hop in." The driver, who looked like someone in his 50s, gestured to me. Ravenwood was a well-known place in the whole city, so I didn’t care to give directions “It seems you don't want to pick up the phone. I hope all is well." The driver said as I rejected Dominic's call the hundred and one time. “It's not really important; I'm fine," I replied without making eye contact. "You see, son, some days are like that," he said, smiling. "I'm quite old and should be retired now, but I can't, man; the bills keep piling up. What to do?” A sad smile ran across his frail face. "Life goes on, no matter what." All this while I just stared at him blankly, still thinking of how to navigate my way through Revenwood, then an idea suddenly struck me. Morrison had once mentioned a secret passage; it's an abandoned poultry farm, and security will be too distracted to look there. “Hey… Emm.” "Kelvin, my name's Kelvin." “Oh. Kelvin, what if I hire you for the rest of the day? I'll pay you." "Hugh?" He gasped in shock. “Are you serious?" “Of course I am. I didn't come out with my car, and my driver is too busy right now, so I'll need someone to drive me. Hope you don't mind." "Of... of course I don't mind; I'm at your service." He chuckled a bit. I could see the wide grin on his face; I could tell he was happy with my offer. That being settled, I'll have him wait a few meters from the poultry house while I go in and extract Ella. Morrison mentioned that the tunnel leads to the basement. "Change of plans, Kelvin?" “Hugh? You no longer need my services?" His face suddenly went pale. “No, not at all. That's not what I meant, and of course, I need your services." "Phew,” he let out a sigh. "We won't be going to Ravenwood; we'll be going to check my friend's abandoned poultry farm. I'd like to see what I can do with the land.” "Oh well, that's a good one, you know; land is a great asset." "Yeah, you're right," I nodded. “Over there, just stop before the signpost." “Sure. Here we are." He said, turning off the engine. I stared at my wristwatch. "Less than 2 hours left,” I mumbled. "Here, have this." I gave him 100 dollars. "You'll have more if you wait," I assured him, then turned and left hurriedly. The shock on his face said how grateful he was. The farm was not difficult to locate, and the hole behind the abandoned aluminum sheet covered with leaves and soil wasn't difficult to locate, either. “Why is it so easy?” I thought. "Well, no one's expecting me; no one knows I'm here, not even Dominic knows I'll be here," I muttered. I quickly cleared the pathway, quietly making sure not to attract attention. Immediately after I was done clearing the path, I bent to go in, but something stopped me; someone touched me from behind. Then I turned and saw him. “What the hell?” I almost screamed.
