A Mother Never Forgotten

1656 Words
Nobody spoke. For several long seconds, the only sound in the penthouse was the soft hum of the city outside. Ava stared at the paused security footage. At the face of the man standing beside Vanessa. At the face of a man who was supposedly dead. Her pulse hammered in her ears. "We buried him." Marcus repeated the words. Almost to himself. As though saying them again might somehow make them true. Ethan slowly turned away from the laptop. His entire body felt numb. Because he remembered Lucas. Of course he remembered him. Lucas Blackwood had been more than a cousin. Growing up, he had been Ethan's best friend. The older brother he never had. The one person who could make him laugh when life inside the Blackwood mansion became unbearable. Then one day... Lucas disappeared. The family said there had been an accident. A boating accident. A body was recovered. A funeral was held. Everyone mourned. Everyone moved on. Or at least... They tried. Now it appeared none of it had been real. "Who signed the death certificate?" Ethan's voice was cold. Sharp. Focused. The businessman in him was taking over. Trying to find answers. Trying not to think about betrayal. Marcus rubbed a hand over his face. "Your father." Silence. Of course. Richard Blackwood again. Always Richard. Every road seemed to lead back to him. Ava watched Ethan carefully. She could practically see the storm raging behind his eyes. The anger. The confusion. The hurt. Because if Richard had faked Lucas's death... Then what else had he lied about? Before anyone could continue, Ava's phone vibrated. The sound seemed unnaturally loud. She frowned. Unknown Number. Again. A horrible feeling settled inside her stomach. Slowly, she opened the message. The color drained from her face. "Ava?" Ethan noticed immediately. "What is it?" Her hands began shaking. Without speaking, she handed him the phone. Ethan looked. And instantly went still. The message contained a photograph. A recent photograph. Taken only hours earlier. Ava stood outside Sterling Insurance. Talking to Sophie. Weeks ago. The angle was wrong. Hidden. Secret. Someone had been watching. Again. But it wasn't the photograph that terrified Ethan. It was the message beneath it. Tell Ethan to stop digging. Or you're next. The room became silent. Dead silent. Because this wasn't a warning anymore. It was a declaration of war. And whoever was sending the messages clearly knew exactly how to hurt Ethan. By threatening Ava. Something dangerous flashed across Ethan's face. Something Ava had never seen before. Not anger. Not frustration. Not even fear. Rage. Pure rage. Because this wasn't business anymore. This wasn't about board members. Or missing files. Or family secrets. Someone had threatened her. And Ethan took that personally. Very personally. Marcus noticed it too. The way Ethan immediately moved closer to Ava. The way his protective instincts surfaced without hesitation. The way he looked at her. For the first time, Marcus truly understood what Vanessa had seen months ago. Ethan was in love with Ava. The realization frightened him. Because love made people vulnerable. And right now... Vulnerability could get people killed. A knock suddenly echoed through the penthouse. Everyone froze. Nobody was expecting visitors. Especially not at midnight. The knock came again. Three slow knocks. Exactly the same pattern as before. Ava felt her stomach drop. "Ethan..." He was already moving. Crossing the room. Reaching the door. Every instinct screamed at him not to open it. Yet he did. Slowly. Carefully. The door swung open. And Ethan froze. Standing on the other side was a woman. Late fifties. Elegant. Beautiful. Familiar. The resemblance hit him instantly. His heart nearly stopped. Because the woman looked exactly like the photographs downstairs. Exactly like his mother. The woman smiled sadly. Tears gathering in her eyes. Then she spoke the words that shattered Ethan's world forever. "Hello, Ethan." Silence. The room stopped spinning. Time stopped. Everything stopped. Because the woman standing in front of him should have been dead. And yet... Here she was. Alive. The room stood still. No one moved. No one breathed. Ethan stared at the woman standing in his doorway as though the world had forgotten how to turn. His lips parted. But no words came out. It couldn't be. It simply couldn't. He had stood beside her grave. He had watched the casket lowered into the earth. He had mourned her for fifteen years. So who was this woman? Or perhaps... Who had he buried? The woman looked at him with tear-filled eyes. She didn't rush toward him. She didn't try to embrace him. She simply stood there, trembling. As though she was just as afraid as he was. "Ethan..." Her voice cracked. "I've waited so long for this moment." His hands clenched into fists. "No." The word came out rough. "Don't." A tear rolled down the woman's cheek. "I know this is impossible to believe." "You should be dead." "So I was told." Silence. Behind Ethan, Ava remained frozen. She had never seen him look so... broken. Not when Vanessa accused him. Not when his father's lies surfaced. Not even after discovering Lucas was alive. This was different. This wasn't anger. This was grief colliding with hope. The two emotions fought across his face. Marcus Whitmore slowly stepped forward. His expression unreadable. "You..." The woman turned toward him. A sad smile appeared on her lips. "Hello, Marcus." His knees nearly buckled. "My God..." He whispered. "It really is you." Ava looked between them. "You know her?" Marcus nodded slowly. "I'd recognize Eleanor Blackwood anywhere." The room fell silent. Eleanor. Ethan's mother. Alive. Ethan shook his head. "No." His breathing had become uneven. "This is some kind of trick." "It isn't." "You expect me to believe you disappeared for fifteen years?" "I didn't disappear." Her voice broke. "I was hidden." Those two words changed everything. Ethan frowned. "What do you mean?" She looked directly into her son's eyes. "The night of the accident..." She took a shaky breath. "There was no accident." Silence. "I discovered something." She glanced briefly at Marcus. Then at Ava. Finally back to Ethan. "Something your father and several members of the board were doing." Ethan's jaw tightened. "What?" "They were laundering money through shell insurance companies." Ava gasped. Marcus closed his eyes. As if hearing the truth aloud made it impossible to deny. "I confronted Richard." Eleanor continued. "I told him I was going to the authorities." "What happened?" Ethan asked quietly. "He smiled." Her voice became distant. "He kissed my forehead." "And told me everything would be okay." A tear slid down her cheek. "It was the last time I ever trusted him." "The next evening..." She swallowed. "My car wouldn't start." Ethan remembered the note from the archives. Brake line damage inconsistent with accident report. His heart pounded. "They cut the brakes." Eleanor nodded. "But I never got into the car." "What?" "I was delayed." She looked down at her trembling hands. "By Lucas." The name echoed through the room. Ava's eyes widened. Marcus looked stunned. Even Ethan hadn't expected that answer. "Lucas came running to me." "He'd overheard an argument between Richard and another man." "He begged me not to drive." "He said my car wasn't safe." The room grew quiet. "So what happened?" Ava asked softly. Eleanor looked haunted. "I hid." "For weeks." "I thought the police would find the truth." "They never did." "Instead..." She looked at Ethan with heartbreaking sadness. "I watched my own funeral from a distance." Ava covered her mouth. Ethan felt like the floor had disappeared beneath him. His mother... Had watched him bury an empty coffin. Had watched him grieve. Had watched him grow up believing she was gone. "Why didn't you come back?" The question came out almost childlike. Not from the CEO. Not from the billionaire. But from the sixteen-year-old boy who had lost his mother. Eleanor's tears fell freely now. "I wanted to." "I tried." "But every time I got close..." "They reminded me." "Reminded you of what?" Her voice dropped to a whisper. "They said they'd kill you." Silence. "They said if I ever contacted you..." "They would make sure I buried my son for real." Ethan's composure shattered. Years of bottled-up emotion surfaced all at once. Anger. Relief. Heartbreak. Love. He crossed the room in three quick strides. Then stopped. Only inches away from her. He searched her face. Every feature. Every expression. Looking for proof. Looking for the mother he remembered. She reached into her handbag. Without a word, she removed a delicate silver locket. She opened it. Inside was a tiny photograph. A much younger Ethan, missing his front teeth, grinning as he held up a trophy from a school race. Ethan's breath caught. He had given her that locket for her birthday. No one else knew about it. No one. His eyes filled with tears. "Mom..." The word escaped before he could stop it. Eleanor broke down completely. She stepped forward slowly. Giving him every chance to walk away. Instead... Ethan closed the distance. And wrapped his arms around her. Mother and son clung to each other, both crying openly. Fifteen years of grief poured out in a single embrace. Ava quietly wiped away a tear. Marcus turned toward the window, giving them privacy. It was a beautiful reunion. But beneath the relief... One terrifying question remained. If Eleanor had been hiding all these years... Who had helped her survive? And who had finally decided it was safe for her to come back? Outside the penthouse, parked across the street, a black SUV sat with its headlights off. Inside, a man lowered a pair of binoculars. He watched the reunion through the window. Then smiled. Slow. Satisfied. He picked up his phone and made a call. "They're together." A pause. Then he listened. "Yes." Another pause. "I'll begin Phase Three tonight." He ended the call. Started the engine. And disappeared into the darkness.
