Chapter 12 Marzipan’s little community theater playhouse is down on Grove Street, close to Civic Center in what realtors have taken to calling Hayes Valley. One block over is the over-gentrified shopping stretch of Hayes Street, where tiny boutiques sell the work of local clothing and jewelry designers. There are several places to get a five-dollar cup of coffee or an eleven-dollar hamburger, although the soul food restaurant that had been a neighborhood tradition for twenty years had recently been forced to relocate to find a more reasonable lease. The Zipper Theater is nondescript from the front, a simple flat-front brick building with smoky gray glass doors and a flashy but small sign.
