Karl

‘I’m only going to ask you this once Kyla, are you conspiring with the vampires?’ Karl blasted. Kyla rolled her eyes and walked behind the counter. Karl followed close behind her. Susanna stood by the window staring out at the quiet streets. Karl was bad for business. ‘Now if I was, why the hell would I tell you!’ Karl growled. ‘Don’t make things difficult Kyla just tell me what you know. I’ve had too many reports of strigoi bothering people and destroying produce.” ‘I don’t know anything as you can see my business is fine the only bother I have is you!’ Karl’s hand slammed on the counter. Susanna threw her hand across her chest. ‘Stop it you two! The strigoi have been running rampant but we don’t know anything. They could just be rebelling against you guys!’ Karl and Kyla's heads snapped in her direction. Karl glared at Kyla. Kyla hadn’t been part of the pack for years, she was openly against the guardians. Karl wouldn’t put it passed her to work with the werewolves greatest threats. ‘You already conspire with witches, why wouldn’t you be working with filthy strigoi?’ ‘The only filth around here is you cowards hiding in a dark dusty mansion. The strigoi might even be a better option for Baye Road.’ Susanna sighed, she didn’t need a werewolf show down it would be a monstrous mess to clean up, plus the guardians were their biggest clients. A smile spread on her face when she saw Blanca appear on the street, frantically looking left and right. ‘Watch your mouth Kyla. We ran off a beast last night!’ ‘Doesn’t solve the problem that there’s a traitor hiding among the guardians. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was you pretty boy.’ ‘Where did you hear that! There is no traitor among us.’ Karl barked. Kyla chuckled. ‘Everyone knows Karl. There isn’t much left of the mighty guardians. The traitor could be the last one standing. We’ll just have to wait and see.’ Susanna flipped her hair behind her shoulders and pranced to the counter. Their raised voices were drawing attention and chasing away clients. Blanca was headed this way. Susanna didn’t want her to be frightened away by two hot headed werewolves. ‘Now that you’ve gotten no where will you leave, I’ve got customers coming and I don’t need you two scaring them! Kyla does that well enough on her own.’ ‘This isn’t over.’ Karl stormed to the door. He caught Blanca grabbed the arms of another girl and drag her across the street away from the market. ‘Who’s that?’ Karl asked, his eyes on the girls. ‘You don’t know who works for you?’ Kyla sneered. ‘Not her! You’re so annoying!’ Susanna hid her grin with her fan. ‘That’s Gianna, Blanca’s sister. I thought they were witches at first but turns out I was wrong.’ Karl raised his brows at Susanna. Blanca has a sister? He thought. ‘Why would you think that?’ He asked. Susanna shrugged. ‘They had strong magic around them. More so Gianna than Blanca.’ Karl nodded. The girls had disappeared from the market. He shook his head and exited the store. Did Matteo knew Blanca had a sister? Did it matter? That still didn’t explain the magic. Normal people didn’t reek of magic. He had to speak to Matteo. *** Matteo's Father hadn’t moved the entire time Matteo sat by his side. His hair was long and snow White, his skin was pink and wrinkly. His hands had lost their powerful grip. It was like looking at a different person all together. Matteo placed his Father’s hand back by his side. He took the chair back to the desk and slipped out of the room. He exhaled but didn’t feel any better. The weight of a hundred lives sat on his head. ‘Matteo! There you are.’ Karl said as Matteo ran down the stairs. ‘What’s up?’ ‘No one’s here.’ The house so silent they could have heard a pin drop. ‘Anneska was here in the morning.’ ‘And Blanca?’ Karl raised his brow. Matteo stuck his hands in his pocket and shrugged. ‘What’s going on Karl?’ ‘Did you know Blanca has a sister?’ Matteo frowned. ‘No, she doesn’t. Anneska didn’t mention that either.’ ‘I was in town and the witch at the butchery told me.’ ‘What were you doing there?’ ‘The strigoi problem’s getting worse. Don’t you think it’s fishy she’s keeping her sister a secret?’ Matteo silenced Karl and guided him upstairs to the library and locked the door behind them. ‘I think Blanca’s the white wolf.’ Matteo said. Karl gave Matteo a deadpan stare. ‘How on earth did you come to that?’ Matteo rolled his head and moved to the window. ‘Franz was here a couple days ago and he told me the white wolf was in Baye Road. Hansi told me he’d be here today I was going to tell him but he didn’t show.’ ‘I don’t know Matt, I don’t think so.’ Karl rubbed his head. ‘Wouldn’t it explain the magic around her? It could be a protection spell to keep us from finding out she's the white wolf.’ ‘It could just mean she’s hiding something dangerous.’ ‘No, Karl I think she’s the one we’re looking for.’ ‘Matt, you haven’t gotten too close to her, haven’t you?’ Karl mumbled. Matteo ran a hand through his hair. ‘No, that’s not it.’ ‘You have a duty to the pack, to Baye Road.’ Matteo slapped his face and shot Karl daggers. ‘I know that! But if Blanca is the one—’ ‘Then it would be great for you brother, but I really don’t believe that. Okay, how do we know for sure?’ Matteo’s phone buzzed in his pants. He grumbled and pulled it out and pressed it against his ear. After a few seconds he was dragging Karl out the door. ‘What the hell?’ ‘It was Deb, strigoi are terrorizing the market.’
