Under The Cover of Night

‘You see Kathleen’s not even here! I swear she’s lost it.’ Gianna said. After combing through the house a second time and still they had no sign of Kathleen. ‘She probably got scared after you ran out on her.’ Anneska grumbled. ‘You will not pin this on me Anneska. I’m not my sister.’ ‘Clearly.’ Anneska rolled her eyes. ‘Do we go back to the mansion?’ ‘You are not going back to that house!’ Anneska snapped. ‘I’m sure Kathleen didn’t wander far. I’m going to check outside sometimes she does her spells in the woods.’ ‘She probably pasted out doing them.’ Gianna rolled her eyes. Anneska frowned. ‘Don’t go anywhere.’ Anneska marched out the door and let it rattle against the frame. Gianna shoved her hands in her pockets then kicked the floor board. Being the fate of an entire town sure was boring, Gianna thought. She sat in the living and tapped her fingers on her knees. The eerie silence irritated her more than scared her. ‘What kind of house doesn’t even have a TV?’ A tree ripped in half and slowly fell and lumped in the dirt. Gianna shot up. Another tree buckled and fell close to the house shaking the ground beneath her feet. She ran to the window and pulled the curtains open. It was dark but Gianna could see perfectly. Giant ravenous dogs zipped through the trees, cutting them in half. Gianna's heart nearly paused when a massive beast stood on its toes and looked straight at the window. ‘Shit.’ She shut the curtains. ‘Anneska!’ She yelled. She ran to the kitchen. ‘Anneska! You have to get back here!’ A roar from the bit of hell answered her. A body slammed against the kitchen door. Gianna pressed her body against the stove. ‘Anneska?’ She whimpered. Several hauls came from the other side of the house. The slamming stopped, followed by heavy paws beating the ground around the house. A wounded wolf cry pierced the night sky. ‘Anneska.’ Gianna whispered. She ran to the living, too shaken to open a curtain, she pressed her body against the door. Ravenous dogs barked and howl as if over the last pile of meat. Gianna’s body went cold. The wolf stopped crying, but the monster’s roars filled the dark night. ‘Oh gosh, what do I do?’ She pressed herself against the wooden door. It would never hold. Gianna thought about her sister. No one would protect Blanca if she was gone. She jumped up as the window burst. Gianna screamed. A red eyed beast roared at her, foam dripping from its sharp mouth. ‘Damn it!’ Gianna grabbed a yellow lamp and hurled it at the monster kicking the wall to get in. The beast brushed off the glass as if it were air. Another monster slammed against the door it buckled and nearly opened. ‘Not good. Not good!’ Gianna ran into the kitchen the window was broken and another red eyed beast struggled to get in. Gianna jumped back. She hunched into the cupboards and grabbed a frying pan. ‘You nasty red eyed beast! Get the hell out of my kitchen!’ The pan slipped out of her hand. Her eyed grew wide and the Beast howled in her face. Blasting the scent of blood and rotting flesh in her face. Gianna didn’t have a second to recoil. The ground shook followed by a deep roar. She shut the kitchen door, the other beast was half way into the kitchen. She ran into the hall. The beast jumped through the window. One leap and he was a second behind her. Gianna grabbed the door to the basement and tumbled. She skipped and stumbled down the stairs. She grabbed her bedroom door handle and pulled herself in. Heavy foot steps followed in less than seconds. ‘Okay, okay. I’m cornered.’ Gianna panted. ‘I have no choice.’ Gianna locked the door to buy herself a couple of seconds. She placed her hand on the wall and shut her eyes. Strands of her hair turned white, her eyes turned into blue floodlights. Her teeth and nails sharpened themselves to a point. One punch and the door caved in. Gianna gripped the dressing table and hurled it at the first beast through the door, pinning it against the wall. The next one threw itself on her. Gianna let it land on her back before launching it on her bed. Gianna bolted out of the room. A beast blasted her with its foul breath as she threw herself into the living room. She stumbled back. The beast lifted its hand to rip off her head, she ducked and it swiped the items on the table instead. Gianna crawled under it and thrust her foot in its back. It was only enough to make it stumble. ‘Damn it.’ Her eyes went wide. The beast whirled to rip off her throat. Gianna lifted her hand and truck the beast's stone face. Gianna landed on the floor. She covered her face. The beast let out a hair raising cry. It stumbled and collapsed on the table. It roared, clawing at Gianna. Her cut was deeper than she thought. The beasts downstairs shook the house. Gianna picked herself up and jumped through the busted door, releasing her inner self. Her snow white fur gleamed in the partial moonlight. There was only one place she thought to go. To the Manor, to her sister.
