THIRD PERSON'S POV
“You must obey me.” Mr Mavin Anton yelled in his face. His forehead lined with veins from the anger.
“No, I won't! I will not succumb to your whims and control. I am my own man,” Russell Anton yelled back.
Mr Mavin's palm connected with his cheekbone, the impact sending Russell’s face flying to the side. “How dare you challenge me?” Mr Marvin fumed.
Russell folded his hands into a fist, holding back his desire to smack the father right back. He gritted his teeth in anger; it wasn't the first time his father had hit him, but it felt more embarrassing as Robert Anton, his half-brother, and his mother stood by the side, smirking in happiness.
“That serves him right. He needs to know his place,” Robert said smugly.
“No matter what you say or do, I will not marry whoever you choose,” Russell said through gritted teeth.
“Then you leave me no choice but to do what I will to make sure you obey me. I will take your company from you. I know how much you cherish it. As of today, I am still one of the highest shareholders in your company or have you forgotten?” he smirked.
Russell balled his hands into a fist, his jaw clenched from the anger of his father's words. "You wouldn't dare, Mr Mavin," he gritted out.
“All I need to do is convince a few other shareholders, and we will remove you as the CEO. I am still your father, and I have control over you. You must marry the girl I have chosen. An alliance formed by two strong families will build a greater fortune for us. I have set everything in motion, so you must obey me or risk losing your company.
“Why me? You have your beloved son here. Why not marry him off to the rich and strong family? Why must you try to interfere with every area of my life?”
“That is because you fit the criteria they need. You have done nothing to help this family. This one time, just drop the selfish act and do something for the family,” his father replied.
“So, in essence, I am the sacrificial lamb? You are willing to lay me on the altar of suffering so long as you get what you want? Well, this has gone on for far too long. I will no longer be your sacrificial lamb. I will no longer let you dictate my life.”
“You will, and you must, obey me. I will take every single thing you have, break every single bone in your body, and cripple you if I must for you to marry that girl.”
His words dug a hole in Russell’s heart. Even though he already knew his father didn't love him, his words still broke his heart. “I will not make the same mistake you made choosing the worst person on earth to marry. I will make my own decision; I will live a different life than you did.”
“Did you just indirectly insult me? Did you just call me the worst person on earth? Are you implying that he married the worst person?” Robert’s mother screamed.
“Did he just do that?” Robert asked.
“Of course, stupid! That is what his words implied. This is why he is looking down on us; you always give him the avenue to do that.” His mother yelled at him.
“Did you just insult my mother?” Robert yelled. He rushed to where Robert stood and held him by the collar. Being smaller than Russell, he was barely able to hold him.
“Let me go this instant!” Russell said in a low voice, his eyes red with fury.
Fear flashed in Robert’s eyes, but he quickly concealed it. He knew that he couldn't afford to disappoint his mother or look scared in front of his father.
How dare you speak to me in that manner! You are just a child from a night of drunken mistakes. Your mother was just a whore.” Robert yelled and punched Russell.
Russell saw red. He punched Robert on the nose. The force of the blow sent Robert flying to the ground. Blood rushed down from his nose. Before anyone could do anything, Russell rushed him again and dealt him several blows.
“Security!” Mr Marvin yelled.
Two huge men dressed in all black rushed and dragged Russell off Robert. They held Russell in both hands. Their build and strength did not allow Russell to move no matter how he struggled to release himself.
Robert was limping on the ground. His face was destroyed.
“Ohhh my son. Look at what you did to his beautiful face,” she said in tears. “Are you just going to stand there and do nothing?” Mrs Anton yelled at his husband.
“Drag him out of this house this instant!” Mr Marvin yelled.
The men immediately started dragging Russell out.
Russell was already at the door when he heard Mrs Anton yell. “Was that all you could have done? You could have asked them to beat him up or, better still, lock him up! Look at what he did to your son.”
“Wait,” he said to the security men. They immediately stopped. His father might not know it, but these men obeyed him just as much as they obeyed his father.
“You know nothing good will come out of locking him up. Do you want the news to say that Anton's family is in crisis? That will do us no good, especially for our own company. Russell's company is doing well; they will only suffer a little loss, but it will affect us the most. You know the company isn't doing well. And he will be out once he gets to the station because of his connections,” Mr Marvin replied.
“What was I expecting?” Russell muttered to himself. He walked out, boarded his car and drove off. He drove with so much on his mind. He knew for a fact that his father was capable of doing what he said and even more.
He felt like a grown man with daddy issues who still had to live with the fear of his father. He hated it; over the years he had tried his best to gain his independence away from his father. But whenever he made progress, his father found another way to hold him down again. As he drove, it began to rain. The sound of the patting of the rain on his car brought him some sort of relief. He drove to his company. He packed his car and alighted under the rain.
He knew everyone would have left by that time. He stood and looked at the company he had worked so hard to build. Years of sweat and hard work were about to all go to waste if he didn't listen to his father. But he has never been one to listen to his father. He had already made the decision years ago to become independent. The rain fell on him, drowning his pain and the voices in his head. He had always loved the rain. The sound, the smell of the earth as it hit the ground and the fact that when it fell, it drowned out all the noises in his head.
“I will keep my company safe no matter what. I built it from scratch; I will not allow my father to take it away from me. I will do all I have to win, but I will never marry that girl,” he muttered to himself. He stood there lost in his own world.
“Excuse me, sir,” a voice suddenly said.
His eyes immediately jerked open. He wasn't expecting that someone would still be at the company at this time. He stood motionless, saying no word.
Olivia moved close and tried to cover him with her umbrella, but with her petite figure, she could barely reach him. “Are you okay?” she asked again, but he couldn't form any words.
Olivia suddenly drew him by the hand and began to run when he didn't reply.
