While Chloe remained hospitalized, Preston became obsessed with finding Nina. The bomb had exploded. But Nina had vanished without a trace. If she were dead, there should at least have been a body. Yet there was nothing. Preston went to Nina's apartment, only for the landlord to tell him she had already terminated the lease a week earlier. Back then, Nina had been burning with fever, crying helplessly over the phone for him to come. When he arrived and saw the cramped, damp apartment she lived in, his chest had tightened painfully. He immediately offered to move her somewhere better. But Nina refused.
