A start and gasping breath.
I had awakened this time. My eyes roamed the room in search of the one who had night-black hair, but there was nothing there.
Of course, I remembered. There was no chance of that happening. The moon in the dark sky seemed to laugh at my pale face as I leaned against the window.
“Hearts that dance to the same melody…” I hummed feeling the weight that took my chest, little by little undoing.
Everything would be fixed, I could fix it. I would try even if I couldn't, but in the end, I wouldn't surrender without at least exhausting all available options. Then, as I was lost in thought about my possible actions, a great flash occurred. Smoke, light and then fire. The heat invaded my skin in a friendly yet irritating way. It took seconds for him to be able to make me cry.
What was happening? I felt my body being thrown away. The smell was horrible and the black smoke seemed to flood my lungs like a cunning snake, about to slay its prey.
“Jane…” I tried to call out, but my voice was squeaky, hoarse, barely able to be heard. Was the ringing in my ears due to the explosion? Yes, it looked like blood when I touched its base.
My sister, I needed to find her.
"Jane" I called again, feeling as if sharp knives ripped my vocal cords and liquid fire descended my throat, but there was no answer. Just flames.
Black flames that seemed capable of devouring the entire world with their insatiable hunger.
Flame and flame and then my body gave in, my eyes closed, and I felt like maybe I didn't have to worry about any of this.
No oracles, no weddings. There was nothing left.
…
"That must be what they call being blessed by the gods" Reni grumbled as she rested her face in one of her hands in a carefree way.
I found myself laughing at her unwillingness to the child we found lying amidst the flames and carefully placed my hand over her burned face.
“Don't be like that, Reni” I found myself saying in a friendlier tone than usual.
“Don't give me that,” she muttered, “you also heard what this human being project said. She has no idea how our world works"
Yes, I had heard it too. Most likely everyone had heard it, but that didn't change the fact that that child and I both wanted something similar.
My fingers touched her burned skin and as expected, the silvery glow little by little made the touch of the flames fade away. She was beautiful, for a mortal. Her platinum hair and fair skin would make her pass one of us with immense ease, as would her power that seemed to ripple around her, probably one of the only reasons she survived.
"Weakly" I heard Reni complain "stop looking at her like that, it disgusts me".
“If you keep talking like that, it's going to sound like you're jealous of a human, sister.” Rasta teased her and for a moment, I felt relief. Nothing silenced Reni as quickly as having her pride hurt, and nothing hurt her pride more than being compared to a mortal.
Rasta knew that as much as I did, and in that moment, I felt like hugging him.
“Don't worry, Reni” I called her “my love will always and forever be hers”
She snorted.
“I'd have to be silly to believe Dark” Her words sounded more like a disgruntled mumble, but on her small almond-shaped face, there were hints of rosy cheeks. It must be tricky for people like her, never being able to be honest.
"Need help?" Rasta came to my side and carefully, I removed my hand from the mortal's face.
“Your soul seems to wander, as if lost in your own mind,” I muttered and Rasta sighed.
"She gave up? What a pity"
I clicked my tongue against the roof of my mouth in disbelief and irritation.
"She wouldn't do that, something must be wrong..."
"Don't talk like you know her, Dark" Reni mumbled, her face hidden by the shadows, but still, I could feel the irritation in her words.
I know her, I wanted to answer, but stopped as I looked at Rasta.
"Do you really want to try this?" he asked in disbelief.
My lips curved as I bent over her body.
“Just take care of my body, Rasta. I'll be back soon with our dear friend"
"Speak for yourself" I heard Reni mumble one last time before my eyes closed completely as my corporeal body became lighter and lighter.
It was bedtime. Of traveling and running through Alena's mind. I would bring her back and make the child who so hated ours see the truth.
