Chapter 22 The Beta We get back home. Toffy, one of the pack members, drove us here. He is one of the werewolves the surround the pack's land, checking if there are intruders or not. From the looks of him, he could pass the looks of a bad boy s***h nerd I'm-so-into books guy. He likes to wear round and plain black glasses that gives him the nerdy look. He always reads books, mostly science and shits. At least that's what I learned about him. His eyes are a color of light blue, sparkly, as if he's some sort of a vampire. According to the stories I've heard back in the pack land, he only gets out at night, when he's going to roam around the place. But then again, I'm on a car ride with him, broad daylight. He's no vampire. Pups are scared of him. Once we reach home, Dave and I both thank Toffy for driving us home. Toffy just gives up a slight nod and drives away. Dave shrugs at me as we look at the direction of the disappearing car. We decide to head inside of the house. As soon as we step into the house, an omelette with lots sauted onions and tomatoes are being cooked, and my stomach grumbles. The scent invades my nostril, making me moan. I think, once I eat, I'm going to have foodgasm. Mom is wearing her light blue apron, her hair is in a messy bun, one hand attached to her hip as she cooks the omelette, flipping it to the side. Sun shines brightly on her side, making her appear like a teenager entering 20s. When she sees us, she waves at us and smiles. "How's the project?" Mom asks as she lowers the fire of the stove, turning it into a medium heat as she looks at us over her shoulder. Looking dumb, Dave just has to ask. "What project?" That earns him a jerk of my elbow on his side and he groans in pain and then lights up. "Oh, the project. It was going good. Almost done, but we have a lot to accomplish." Ugh. Why is lying to mothers really hard to do? I know I should not lie. It's wrong, but this is the only way to cover up our disappearance yesterday. If I tell the truth, she would give us the look, scold us, tell us we're crazy, and ground us, which I don't want. We just can't go saying, Oh, hi, Mom, by the way, yesterday was so exhausting. A bunch of wolves, or Rogues in my world, have tried to attack us but fortunately, someone came and helped us. Oh I'd like you to meet them soon. And in addition, I have just seen my mate who broke my heart, who rejected me. Cool, right? Plus, the project is just a make-up story so you wouldn't have to suspect our disappearance. We're sorry for that. Really. We don't want to have you worried for us, but we're fine. Really, really, really fine. From inner to outside fine. Seriously? That's ridiculous. But I open my mouth anyway. "Yeah, it's nearly done." I lie, rubbing my sweaty hands on my pants. When mom fully turns around, she notices the white bandage wrapped around my arm and I know that I'm in deep trouble. Her eyes widen, flashing a worried eyes, and she runs over to me, inspecting it. "No, ma. I'm fine. Just a little sprain. I, ah, got it, um..." Think of a f*****g lie. Think of a f*****g worthy lie. Thankfully, Dave is not stupid. "We were playing something... um, consisting of running?" I'm taking it back, Dave is stupid. Really stupid. "Yeah, he tripped over a rock and landed arm first on the ground. We took him to a clinic. We didn't call you because we didn't want you to worry, but he's fine now, right brother?" "Yeah," I say, assuring Mom. She arches a brow at me, looking at me straight in the eyes. Don't be caught, don't be caught, don't be caught. I silently pray and gulp slowly. Mom doesn't let her eyes roam somewhere, and I know if I ever look away, she would know something is up, and she would know I'm lying to her. So I stare back at her, even though it's pretty hard. "Just a little sprain and the nurse said my arm would go back to normal condition within a week or two. I didn't really trip over a rock. Dave pushed me. I fell on the ground. I was being careless." Mom whips her head to Dave and glares at her. "Ean Davidson Coffler!" Mom stands up and puts her hands on either side of her hips. Uh oh. Mothers do not call their children by their full name unless they are really mad or angry, or you did something real bad. Dave flinches, and I feel sorry for the guy suddenly. I was panicking! I had to make a story, which she would believe. And she does believe it! Dave would throw a fit at me later. I'm sure of it. Later that night, Dave did throw a fit on me. I said I was sorry and panicking and I had to lie just to cover up everything. He just went back to his room, sulking. Now, I'm in my room, my back on bed, me staring at the ceiling, thinking of everything, thinking of the Rogues, thinking of Dave being Perry's mate, and mostly, thinking of Cloud. If there would be a wish that would come true in an instant, what I would wish is that to forget everything. I would do it in a heartbeat. But even the Magicians can't do that. I sigh, rolling on my chest and staring at the white full moon. Just staring at the moon makes me calm. Maybe it's because of the pack that I was once a werewolf, and somehow, somewhat, full moon still has an effect on me, even though I'm already human and I have no wolf. The stars, along with the moon, are twinkling brightly across the flat dark violet shade of the sky. It makes me think, what if I'm a star? Would everything still be the same? Would people look at me and say I'm beautiful? That I give them light into their life? I sigh. What a waste of time. I go back to staring the ceiling. There's a clunk sound vibrates throughout my room that makes me jerk up, making me sit on my bed and looking frantically around my room. Clunk. Another pebble hit my window and I walk over there, only to find Perry Dames on one of the branches of the tree, smirking. As soon as he sees me in a panic state, he immediately puts his index finger on his lips, making a shh gesture. I look at him like he's crazy (though he really is! But I wouldn't tell him that if I were you.) I open my window, lifting it up and I glare at Perry. "What are you doing here?" I whisper yell as I look at each side, checking to see if somebody is watching us. No one. Nothing suspicious. But still, Perry being around my house is suspicious. I narrow my eyes at him, crossing my arms across my chest, buffing it up a little, not wanting him to see how I'm scared because of the little stunt he pulled. Perry shrugs, resting his cheek on the branch as he swings his arm back and forth. I roll my eyes at him. "Nothing," he says in a monotone voice and sighs. I just stare at him, not giving up. We both just stare at each other until he caves in. He rolls off the branch, falling a bit until he grabs the branch with both hands and swings around it, then lands on the branch on his feet. He smirks at me as he sees my amused expression, which I turn in a frown. "I know a bit of acrobatics. Anyways, the Alpha sent me here to watch over you guys and..." "To watch over me and my brother, which is your mate." I state, fisting my hands. That stops him from spilling out a set of words and instead, looks at me with curious eyes, until it becomes sad. Perry nods, sitting on the branch as he rests his palms on his knees, shoulder sagged down, as if he's carrying the world. Perry looks at the full moon, smiling sadly. "Yeah," "How do you deal with it? The last time I checked, you hated gays." His eyes turn cold and it makes me freeze, leaving me scared. Then it becomes sad again. "True that," he agrees, bowing his head down in shame. He opens up his mouth, then closes it shut. Looking away, he watches the full moon again and tilts his head. "I hated gays, but then I found out I was... am one of them. You know? The day you ran? After you got rejected,"- I flinch, unclenching my hands only to clench it again -"sorry about that, but yeah, after you ran, I went to follow you. I was late. You broke the Forbidden Law, and once you turned into a human, I watched everything from afar. I followed you. "Then you got hit by a car, and Dave was driving it. That's when I felt the pull, and I knew back then and there, that Dave's my mate, and he's a man, which makes me... gay? I don't know. I was stuck, looking at him with loving eyes until I forgot that I was going to get you back to the Pack Land. But I failed. I never followed the car because I was scared. You know? I mean, I had been interested with girls and suddenly, here Dave came, ruined... ugh, I hate explaining. All I know is that I want him to be mine, to claim him, to be with him together. And it's all so hard because I'm still adjusting. I'm still trying to..." "To accept yourself?" I suggest and he nods. Boom. "You know, you have to accept yourself, not just try. I'm willing to help you to get Dave's attention, but it's going to be hard since he's interested with girls. Dumb girls, to be honest. And slutty girls." Perry Dames's ears perk up as he hears that I'm going to help him. "Really? You would do that?" "Yes, because I'm not a d**k like you." I don't know when did I have the guts to spew those words at him. For a moment, I got scared that he would beat me to a pulp once those words entered his brain, but he does nothing. Instead, he shuts his eyes and hangs his head low. "I'm sorry, for everything," he whispers, running his fingers through his hair. "Fuck... I hate apologizing. You should rest. I'll be here, guarding you guys." "Okay, good night." Perry Dames bids me good night and goes back to resting on his chest on the branch of the tree, swinging his arms back and forth as he watches the house. I lie down on my bed, giving a stare to the ceiling once more before I shut my eyes. Relaxation greets me hard and hugs me tight, making me sigh in relief and I smile. For once, my heart grew fond of Perry. Hearing him say sorry for what he has done to me is enough to lift my mood, but that doesn't mean that I have to forgive him now. He still has a long way to earn that from me. With that, I wrap the duvet around me and try to sleep. Eventually, I fall asleep. But this time, no nightmares or bad dreams have occcured.
