Shift after shift Melanie keeps working. She tries her best to make sure she's getting enough money to buy the latest release of Mugler body suits because there's no way she's going for Greg's party looking mid.
"I gotta make sure I buy that fit before next week I cannot look mid or less" she murmurs to herself as she's working Anna enters the store and immediately they lock eyes.
Anna walks up to her
"I see you're working overtime, what you need the money for"
"What? working overtime, I just got in for my afternoon shift, I don't know what you're talking about?"
"I saw you come in this morning right after second period, don't lie. My aunt's store is right across this store, in case you've forgotten"?
"Yeah, I forgot that..."
"Off course you would, you've got everyone believing that you're this big shot who's mum has this shoe making company that's worth a million dollars"
"It's okay stop it, I know you know who I am and my whole life, reminding me is enough"
"I need to remind who you are because you're here busting your ass to buy clothes and show off to people that will leave you the second they know who you really are, you could be saving for college but you just wanna buy Chanel purses and impress a couple of nobody's"
Melanie raises her voice at Anna
"Stop it, just stop it. You don't know anything about me. For so long I've wanted to get attention and be popular and cool but everytime my poverty got in the middle of it. You don't know how it feels. If you want a new Chanel purse or Louise Vuitton you just gotta call your mom and boom you've got it. But me I gotta do six jobs just leave me alone "
Anna looks at me with anger
"You know what? I'll leave you alone, but I hope all these lies you're telling and things you're doing, is all worth it because this is gonna blow up in your face, I promise you."
Then Anna leaves the store.
To be candid it's not like Melanie didn't like Anna actually they had been great friends especially when she first got to Townsville, Anna took her around introduced her to her family and made her feel like she'd be here her whole life but when she started telling the lies she didn't know she was putting Anna in the shadows of it. It's not like Anna paid attention to it but she just wanted her friend back.
"Well my shift is almost over, I need to get to the next one before then I'll grab a bite at Gabby's"
She'd been on the queue for about 15 minutes and was almost running late for her next shift but that wasn't her major concern, what bothered her was she didn't want anyone from school seeing her at this place. Not like the food was bad contrary she loved the food even if she had a million dollars she'd still eat here not to be edgy but the food was better than what she had at those classy bougie restaurant she went to eat at just to take pictures for her i********:, according to her they were expensive and tasteless.
"No wonder rich people always look miserable they're always eating food that taste bad, if I had that much money I'd always, always eat at Gabby's"
"You would?" Not knowing that someone was listening to her
She turned and saw this cute boy with the dreamiest eyes she'd ever seen.
"Yes, I would" she turned and looked at him.
He winked at her and walked passed her
She couldn't help but look at him, he was charming and handsome.
"Melanie Rodrigo stop looking at him, focus you have a boyfriend close your eyes"
She needed to get her food and be off but the queue was just too long. After standing and struggling on the line Mr handsome asked her for her order
_its him again, I didn't know he worked here_
She thought to herself
"I'll have two large pizza cakes and strawberry smoothie please"
"Coming right up miss"
Within five mins he got her order for her.
"Here you go, two large pizza cakes and a strawberry smoothie"
"Thank you, how much will that be?"
"$75 only"
"Here you go, you can keep the change"
"Hold on there, you got so much cash to throw around, ordering two large pizza cakes, you've got quite the appetite"
"It's just 15 cents and I needed to thank you for helping me cut the line just so you know before you go around flirting with me"
"It's okay young missy, I don't need 15 cents they're other ways you can thank me"
Melanie looks at him with an irritated look on her face
"What do you mean?"
"I mean you can thank me in another way"
Melanie raises her voice
"What do you take me for? You think I'm a random trap--"
"Listen that's not what I meant--"
Before he could finish talking Melanie leaves the restaurant agitated and angry
"Where did Gabby's get him from they just be giving jobs to random strangers these days"
"You wouldn't believe the audacity he had Brie, I'm so disgusted, boys just don't behave like gentlemen anymore"
"Did you tell Micah?"
"No, it's not a big deal"
"You should sue the restaurant Mel, how could they do that to you, don't they know who your mum is"
"It's a really big restaurant, I don't want to start any drama for my mum and besides I just spoke to the management to get him fired"
"Still Mel, he could be of harm to other girls out there"
Melanie paused for a minute and thought of how dumb her friend actually was not just for what she just said but how she believed all her crazy lies especially this one she had just told her. Melanie needed someone to vent to about what had just happened to her at Gabby's so she told Brie the exact same story but edited the fact it was at Gabby's and came up with a bougie restaurant name. With Brie you didn't have to try to hard she always believed Melanie.
"To be honest he was good looking it just hurt that he was stupid"
"Yeah, it really hurt"
"Brie do you go out often? You know like outside your house and stuff"
"Well, yeah like I go out to walk my dog and stuff"
"No silly, I mean shopping, beacations, clubbing and eating at different restaurants"
"Melanie my family can't afford all that and I'm already doing two jobs to savefor college all that is money I don't have unlike you, you're mum's super rich and all you have to do ask her and she'll give you, my mum is always paying the bills and honestly I'm grateful for that"
"Oh I understand but wouldn't you wanna be able to do all that"
"Yes, I would but like I said it's money I don't have besides college is more important"
"Yeah, you're right"
"Yeah, goodnight Mel I really gotta sleep"
"Goodnight Brie" she said in a really cool calm voice as she hung up the phone.
She laid down on her bed and It was at this moment Melanie realized that she had played herself, so hard. She wanted to be the popular kid and show off when she had nothing in reality. To be honest college never really bothered her because her mom had already stacked up enough money for her college fees so who was she trying to impress? She could be living her regular life to nobody's appeal.
"Anna was right but the show must go on"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I am beautiful, I am gorgeous, I am bold and I am confident"
You're wondering who that is? Its Melanie Rodrigo doing her daily affirmations
"Universe you exist for me to succeed, whatever I desire I shall--"
"Knock knock"
Melanie's mum knocks on the bathroom door and swops her head in
"Mum!" She screams
"Sorry honey, can we talk? You came in late last night"
"Oh, about that I got another job and I was running a late night shift"
"Another job? You already five, don't you have school?"
"I do, but I need to make extra cash"
"I'm not against you working but your grades shouldn't drop and call if you're coming back late"
"Yes mum"
"Also what you need the extra money for?"
"Mum I just wanted to buy Jimmy choo shoes"
"Those are expensive darling"
"I know right"
"Alright baby I love you, your grades shouldn't drop"
"I love you too mum, they won't drop I promise"
They both hug. Melanie's dad passed on when she was really young so for a long time it had been just the both of them. Even though her mum had tried dating it never worked out and Melanie was always happy because she couldn't stand the idea of a step dad she liked it being she and her mum with her dad's memories. It always made it easier for them to move.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I saw you looking at her"
"Just because we're dating I shouldn't look at anybody, jeez Mel you're so insecure"
"I'm insecure because I caught you checking out another girl infront of me, Micah you're so despicable"
"Really, listen up Mel she's a cheerleader for God sake I'm a football player we look at them all the time oh my god" Micah says with deep frustration in his voice.
"Micah". Melanie takes a deep breath and let's out
"That cheerleader you were looking at is Lotta, my sworn nemesis and your ex girlfriend"
Micah bows his head in shame
"I'm sorry Mel, I'm really sorry babe it just--"
"Just what? Micah?"
"Nothing"
Melanie walks away in frustration.
