Chapter 6: Silver Diamond
In Kenville City, there is one of the tallest buildings in the city. This building is home to the hunters. Long ago, a faction of humans learned the secrets hidden in the world.
These humans learned that not everyone is human. These creatures have roamed the earth, hiding in plain sight. This particular faction saw these creatures as a threat that needed to be dealt with in the most deadly of ways.
In modern times, this faction has adapted to time. They learned to hide in plain sight as their enemies do. A secret war among humans and the supernatural has been going on for centuries.
Fate intervened to end this war by intertwining two souls together.
This building is Silver Diamond headquarters, a fifteen-story building with three of those floors underground. On the fifteenth floor is the C.E.O’s office.
Inside a locked drawer in the C.E.O’s desk is a silver-framed photo that she only takes out once a year. Erin admits she’s made mistakes in the past, but this life-impacting decision was the hardest she’s ever had to make.
A woman scorned is not something to be trifled with. A cheating husband and a daughter who refuses to speak to her has Erin scorned more than anyone could ever know.
Years ago, her husband, Alistair Diamond, came to her with some particularly hard news to swallow- he had chosen to accept the mate bond he shared with a werewolf. Alistair chose to leave Erin and the company that day.
Their daughter chose Alistair’s side in the end. Erin has become convinced that he husband has turned their daughter against her. However, unbeknownst to Erin, she is the reason her daughter wants nothing to do with her. This is the one mistake Erin is unable to admit to herself.
The photo within the silver frame is of a girl with the biggest smile, showing her missing front teeth. Her brown hair was pinned into two pigtails with a little pink bow on either side. The little girl’s chocolate brown eyes shine bright with joy.
Yesterday was January seventeenth, her daughter, Isla’s birthday. She’s missed so many, but every year Erin opens the locked drawer and pulls the photo out. She sets it on her desk to be displayed for the day.
It’s time to put the photo back in its place. This company was supposed to be Isla’s and should be training to take it over by now. Erin believes it is time to bring Isla into the fold, but fate seems to have other plans.
Erin has never believed in fate or destiny. It’s all a hoax to her, but she will soon learn just how strong destiny can fight back.
As Erin looks at the photo of Isla lovingly and is filled with regret, her French manicured finger strokes the little girl’s face. She promises herself that her daughter will soon be back, her and her husband.
Erin has planned for years to make them both see the error of their ways. She’s grown particularly partial to the method of brainwashing.
Before the framed picture is placed back into the drawer and locked away, Erin kisses her daughter’s photo. Once it is locked away, frustration consumes her.
Erin has tried everything to get Isla to come work for her and take over the company, but she has refused every offer. It took her a few years before she was able to find where Alistair and Isla are living now.
She found them just outside the Shadow Mist pack. ‘Did he really think hiding so close to a pack would deter me?’ Erin thinks to herself.
Needing to blow some steam off, Erin takes her private elevator down to the sub levels. The building has a three-floor basement where they train.
Every person who works at Silver Diamond is a hunter. At Silver Diamond, purging the world of werewolves is the goal. They hunt other supernatural creatures when they become a problem or get in their way.
Training is taken very seriously at Silver Diamond. Erin used to get so angry at Alistair for pushing training and hunting skills so hard. He’d even push the children. Alistair always said, ‘What is the point of this if you are not at your best?’
Alistair expected perfection from every soldier, and when they didn’t live up to expectations, they were pushed harder. Now that Erin has the reins, she understands why her husband was so hard. When you’re commanding an army, there is no room for unicorns and rainbows. You have to rule an army with an iron fist.
Alistair always saw a lack of skills as imperfection and weakness. These characteristics had no room in his army. Erin strives to rule as he did, if not better than he did. Alistair became everything he hated: weak, corrupted, and soft.
Erin gets off the elevator on sub-floor two, where the gun and target practice range is. Anything that can be shot or thrown is practiced on this floor. Sub-floor one is where the armory is. All weapons are kept on this floor. Tactical planning is also done here. Erin likes to call this floor the war room.
Sub-floor 3 has a gym and combat training. They train in all kinds of hand-to-hand combat. Everyone is expected to be the best.
Erin pulls her gun from the gun locker kept in the target range. She grabs three clips of silver bullets. Werewolf hunters use silver bullets. Silver is very light and soft to be used for bullets, which is why they practice with it.
They use different kinds of specialized bullets, like pure silver. Some bullets hold silver nitrate inside. Silver nitrate isn’t as strong as pure silver, but it will certainly do some damage.
Erin pops a clip in and begins shooting at the target. Unlike normal shooting ranges, the targets are in the shape of wolves instead of people. The image of the wolf only reminds Erin of why she is so angry. Her husband left her for a wolf, took her daughter, and turned her against her.
“Mrs. Diamond,” Erin is interrupted by her assistant, Mathew. She sharply turns to him with a hardened expression. She gave explicit instructions not to be disturbed today. “This better be good, Mathew, or your head is going on the chopping block.” Erin threatens.
Every hunter knows to never piss off Erin. Ever since Alistair left, she had become cold and hard. She didn’t used to be this way. Once upon a time, she was actually described as nice and kind, but not anymore.
“Madam, I apologize, but it is urgent. One of you spies has sent urgent news.” Mathew says quickly in fear of what Erin might do to him if she dislikes what he says.
“What is it?” Erin asks. She has spies everywhere. If one of them has reported something so suddenly, then it must be important.
Mathew clears his throat before he speaks. His nervousness alone speaks to how Erin might take the news. “It’s about your daughter. Ms. Isla met a man last night.” Mathew says, but hesitates to continue.
“Well, spit it out! What about this man?!” Erin snaps when she notices Mathew’s hesitation. Her patience is wearing thin.
“Uh, yes ma’am. He claims to have seen Isla with this man last night. She called him her boyfriend. But that's not what should concern you…” Mathew pauses for a moment before he continues.
“H-he’s a werewolf, and your daughter bears an alpha’s mate mark. She is mated to Alpha Aiden of the Shadow Mist Pack.” Mathew stutters.
Erin’s body visibly shakes in anger. She grabs the gun and pops in a full clip, emptying it in no time. “SHE’S WHAT!?” Erin screams in anger.
Fury is all that runs through Erin’s veins now. She will not allow her daughter to be taken by a wolf as her father was. She has even more reason to target the Shadow Mist pack. “Ready the war room,” Erin orders with one thing on her mind: war.
