Akra stood tall, pushing out his chest, and threw shards of ice at one of the approaching tuyets, but the shards simply shattered on the beast’s thick furry hide. A rope of darkness shot out from Kalin’s palm and clasped hold of the beast’s neck. Then a rope of light shot out of his other palm, coiled around the beast and seared its fur, burning into its hide. Mai smelled the burning skin and hair for a moment before it drifted away in the blizzard wind. The tuyet struggled furiously, breaking Kalin’s hold, but retreated just far enough away to still be seen.
