Kael’s POV I heard a branch crack somewhere deep in the forest. My eyes turned quickly toward the darkness beyond the trees. My body started contrasting and my fist were pulling together, it was not intentional, it was like a habit now. For a few seconds, I listened carefully. Nothing followed. Just the sound of wind moving through leaves and the distant cry of something that was been hunted or fell prey to predators of the night. This forest never truly slept. Even now, at past midnight, it still felt alive around us. Watching. Breathing.
