32 The storm that came in from the Atlantic Ocean followed Lynn all the way upstate, but it didn’t overtake her until she parked her SUV in front of the Harrington Police Station. As soon as she did, the dark blue skies lit up with a peal of golden-colored lighting and the gusting wind bent the trees growing all around it, bringing the scent of pines. A moment later, rain came down in sheets. She bolted for the door but even so, her hair was wet and water was running down her forehead and the sides of her face as she entered the station. The receptionist looked up, her eyes magnified by her winged glasses. “It’s raining hard out there, is it?” Lynn nodded. “I need to speak to Chief Millhouse. Now.” The station was stuffy and hot, the windows quickly fogging up as the moisture outside
