The road and the forest closing in on both sides were eerily quiet and dark as Ryan drove back to Nate’s house. Not peaceful, though. The woods surrounding his hometown had ceased to be peaceful for him the night Alicia died. He didn’t want to be home. Yet here he was and there was no going back to anything else. Truth is, he never expected to come back from the war alive. But as it happened, the worst injury he ever sustained in his twenty-year career was a sprained wrist. Not for lack of trying.
