A thick grey cloud seemed to have settled right over the campground as Lynn followed Tara back to the crime scene, letting through practically no light. In the distance the sun was still bright, but under the canopy dusk had come early. Tara cut a path right through the forest, and Lynn tripped on hidden roots and slipped on wet leaves as she tried to match the younger deputy’s hurried pace. “The ME is ready to cut the victim down,” Tara informed her as she glanced over her shoulder. “And a detective team has come to take over the case. I thought you should meet them right away.” The younger woman’s words were informatively matter-of-fact, but Lynn still sensed that dealing with the detectives would not be pleasant. Or productive.
