CHAPTER FOUR — The Shadowmoon Court

1115 Words
The Shadowmoon territory was nothing like Mooncrest. The deeper we walked, the more the forest transformed. The trees here grew tall and ancient, their trunks thick as pillars, their leaves moving as if stirred by unseen currents. The air tasted different too. Colder. Sharper. Charged with something old and powerful, like magic that had been sleeping and had only just begun to stir. Torches lined the trail ahead. Their flames glowed a deep gold rather than orange, illuminating the narrow pathway that wound between black stone archways and towering trees. The light reflected off Caelen’s eyes, making them gleam like forged silver. He walked slightly ahead of me, though not far enough to distance himself. Close enough that I could feel the pull of his presence. Every step he took was precise. Controlled. A man accustomed to carrying entire kingdoms on his shoulders. We reached a clearing where a structure rose out of the ground as if the earth itself had shaped it. A fortress of obsidian stone, smooth and dark enough to reflect the moonlight like polished glass. The walls stretched high, flanked by watchtowers and guardians stationed with quiet vigilance. They bowed their heads as Caelen approached. Their loyalty was silent. Fierce. Absolutely. He gestured for me to follow him through the main gates. They opened without command. Inside, the air was warmer. The floors were smooth stone veined with silver patterns that shimmered faintly underfoot. The halls were lit with lanterns of amber flame. I expected coldness, emptiness, and a kingdom built for war. But there was life here. The sound of voices echoed down distant corridors. Wolves in human form moved with quiet purpose, some carrying scrolls, others speaking in low tones. They looked disciplined, but not harsh. Strong, but not cruel. And yet, something shifted in the atmosphere when their eyes passed over me. Curiosity. Recognition. Unease. Caelen did not acknowledge their stares. He walked with the confidence of a man who did not need to be feared to be obeyed. We reached a grand hall. Tall windows stretched from floor to ceiling, revealing the night sky. A long table sat at the center, carved from blackened wood. I could feel energy in the room, not magic exactly, but something like it. Caelen turned to me. “You need rest,” he said. The statement was practical, not dismissive. My voice came quiet. “I am not fragile.” A slow breath left him. Not amusement. Not impatience. Something more like understanding. “No,” he said. “You never were.” The truth of it hit deeper than I expected. Before I could reply, footsteps approached. The same warrior who had met us at the border stepped inside. His posture straightened as he bowed his head again. “High Council has been notified,” he reported. “The Elders will assemble at dawn. They request guidance on how to address the matter of the bond.” A chill threaded through me. Caelen’s expression shifted, subtle but sharp, like the tightening of a blade. “They will not address it at all,” he said. “This matter is not for public speculation.” The warrior nodded immediately, though tension flickered across his jaw. “Yes, Your Majesty. I will inform them.” He left without another word. I exhaled slowly. “They are wary of me.” “They are wary of anything they do not understand.” Caelen’s eyes met mine. “They know bonds do not break. And they know they do not simply vanish.” I swallowed. “Someone erased us.” His eyes darkened. “Yes.” The anger inside that single word did not explode outward. It coiled inward, heavy and contained, like a storm held inside a sealed chamber. “Why would someone do that?” I asked. He held my gaze for a long moment before speaking. “There are powers in this world who fear what wolves become when they love without restraint.” His words felt like a truth spoken from something older than either of us. He stepped closer. Not enough to touch. Just enough that I could feel the space between us change. “Aria,” he said, my name a low sound that felt almost like a memory, “your wolf is not newly awakened. She is reborn.” My breath hitched. “Reborn?” He nodded once. “Which means you have lived another life. And in that life, we were bonded.” My pulse stumbled. Another life. Another time. Another us. My wolf stirred, pressing warmth into the back of my mind. I felt fragments then. Not images. Not clear memories. Sensations. A hand touching mine beneath starlight. A voice whispering my name in a tone soft enough to break mountains. A vow spoken in the dark. A kiss that tasted like permanence. My fingers trembled. Caelen noticed. His voice softened, rough at the edges. “You do not need to remember now. Your memories will return when your mind is ready to hold them.” I nodded slowly. Silence settled again, but not cold silence. Full silence. Weighted with something that had always existed between us, even when we did not know it. A soft bell chimed somewhere deep in the fortress. Caelen looked toward the sound, then back at me. “I will have a room prepared for you,” he said. “Safe. Private. No one will disturb you.” I did not want to say it, but the truth left before I could stop it. “I do not feel safe alone.” His expression changed. Barely. But I saw it. A fraction of second where his control wavered. He stepped closer, close enough that I could feel the warmth of him and the steady rhythm of his breath. He did not touch me. “You are not alone,” he said quietly. “Not anymore.” The bond between us pulsed, faint and fragile, but real. A thread reconnecting. My wolf exhaled in relief. I nodded once. Caelen turned to lead me deeper into the fortress, but before he took a step, a voice echoed across the hall. “You brought her here.” The voice was female. Cold. Sharp. We turned. A woman stood at the far end of the corridor. Tall. Beautiful. Dark hair braided down her back like a whip. Her eyes were a deep storm-gray, and they were fixed on me with a look that felt like a blade. I did not know her. But she knew me. Her voice was a quiet accusation. “So the lost queen returns.” And the world shifted again.
