43 Chris Gallagher stood and watched as Jim changed the tyre on the Buick. He'd already made the call. Welch had blown his top, as expected. But he would have been sacked on the spot if he'd told him the real truth. The official line was there had been an issue with the unions, but that he'd argued them down and they were moving to the exploration site. It had bought him some time while they loaded the scaffolding back onto its truck and waited for the rescue vehicles to arrive.
