Chapter 2: the contract

Rose's POV: I stood outside the Astor villa, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. I had never been to a place like this before. The mansion was huge, with beautifully manicured lawns and a grand entrance. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by the housekeeper, who showed me to Mia's room. Mia was already waiting for me, looking adorable in her little dress. "Big sister!" she exclaimed, running to hug me. I smiled, feeling a warmth in my heart. "Hey, sweetie! Ready for our first day together?" Luke's POV: I watched from the doorway as Rose interacted with Mia. She was natural with my daughter, and Mia seemed to be taking to her quickly. I couldn't help but notice how beautiful Rose looked in the soft light of the room. Her brown eyes sparkled as she laughed with Mia, and her smile was captivating. I felt a pang of interest, but I pushed it aside. I had no time for distractions, especially not with the business deals I had pending. Rose's POV: As the day went on, I got to know Mia better. She was a sweet child, but she had a stubborn streak. I enjoyed the challenge of figuring out how to connect with her. After lunch, we went for a walk in the garden. Mia pointed out different flowers and trees, asking me questions about them. I was impressed by her curiosity. As we walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What would Luke Astor be like as a boss? Would he be demanding? Would he expect me to do more than just take care of Mia? Luke's POV: I observed Rose and Mia from afar, noticing how well they interacted. Rose was patient and kind, and Mia seemed to be thriving under her care. I made a mental note to speak with my assistant about the contract. I wanted to make sure Rose understood the terms and conditions of her employment. As I watched Rose laugh with Mia, I felt a sense of satisfaction. Maybe this arrangement would work out after all. As I stood in my office, gazing out the window, my phone buzzed. I answered, knowing it was likely my mother. "Luke, darling!" my mother's voice chimed. "How are you?" "I'm fine, Mother," I replied, expecting the usual pleasantries. But she quickly got to the point. "Luke, it's time you settled down. You're 28, and I want grandchildren. I've made a list of potential partners for you to consider." I sighed inwardly, knowing better than to argue. "Mother, I—" "Oh, don't worry, dear," she interrupted. "These women are all perfect matches. Let me read you the list: Sophia Patel, Emily Chen, Lucy Smith..." Lucy Smith? I raised an eyebrow. My mother knew about my... complicated history with Lucy's family, yet she still thought Lucy would be a good fit. "And, of course, there are a few others," Mother continued. "I'll send you the full list. Arrange meetings with each of them, Luke. I expect updates soon." I rubbed my temples, feeling the familiar pressure. "Mother, I understand your concerns, but—" "No buts, Luke," she said firmly. "Your family's legacy depends on it. Now, let's discuss the wedding plans..." I tried to think of a way to deflect my mother's pressure. "Mother, if I had introduced you to someone special, would you leave me alone about this?" There was a pause, and I could almost hear her calculating. "Well, yes, dear. If you're serious about someone, I'd be delighted to meet them. That would certainly ease my concerns." I seized the opportunity. "Actually, Mother, I do have someone in mind. I'll introduce you to her soon." My mother's voice perked up. "Oh, wonderful! I'm looking forward to meeting her. You know, I've been thinking about planning a family dinner soon. We can invite her then." I hesitated, knowing I had to tread carefully. "That sounds perfect, Mother. I'll make sure she's free." We wrapped up the conversation, and I felt a temporary reprieve. But I knew I'd have to come up with a plan to maintain the illusion. As I watched Rose play with Mia, I couldn't help but notice the way she smiled, the way her eyes sparkled. She was beautiful, but it was more than that. She was kind, patient, and caring. I found myself looking forward to seeing her, to talking to her. I realized that my initial impression of her had been wrong. She was more than just a capable nanny; she was a remarkable person. One evening, as I was working in my study, Rose came to drop off Mia's homework. We exchanged a few pleasantries, and I found myself lingering in the conversation, enjoying her company. "Rose, can I ask you something?" I said, curiosity getting the better of me. "Of course, Mr. Astor," she replied, her eyes meeting mine. "Please, call me Luke," I said, feeling a sense of familiarity wash over me. "I was wondering, what made you decide to become a nanny?" Rose smiled, and I was struck by the warmth in her eyes. "I've always loved children," she said. "I worked at an orphanage before coming here. I guess you could say it's my passion." I nodded, intrigued. "I see," I said. "You're very good with Mia. She adores you." Rose's face lit up, and I felt a pang of... something. I wasn't sure what it was, but I knew I wanted to see more of her smile. Rose's POV: As Luke nodded, I felt a sense of comfort knowing he was pleased with my work. "I'm glad to hear that," he said, and I smiled, feeling appreciated. "Actually, Rose," he continued, his expression turning serious, "I wanted to discuss your contract with you. I've been thinking, and I'd like to propose an extension... and a new arrangement." My curiosity piqued, I leaned forward slightly. "What kind of arrangement?" I asked, my voice neutral. Luke's eyes locked onto mine, his gaze intense. "I'd like you to be my contract wife," he said, his words sending shockwaves through me. "In return, you'll receive a generous compensation and financial support for yourself." I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. A contract wife? Was he serious? I tried to process my thoughts, but my mind was racing. "Why would you want to do that?" I asked, trying to sound calm. "My mother is pressuring me to settle down," he explained. "This way, I'll satisfy her expectations. It's a practical solution." I took a deep breath, weighing my options. It was a tempting offer, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was selling myself short. "I need time to think about it," I said finally, trying to sound composed. Luke nodded, his expression unreadable. "Take all the time you need," he said. "But I expect an answer soon. As I left Luke's study, my mind was racing. A contract wife? It was a surreal proposition. I thought about the benefits - financial security, a comfortable life. But at what cost? I'd be tying myself to Luke without love, without passion. Just a business arrangement. I felt torn. Part of me wanted to say yes, for the sake of stability and security. But another part of me rebelled against the idea of selling myself short. As I walked back to Mia's room, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was standing at a crossroads. Which path would I choose?
