Chapter 8 - The Demons In Her Nightmare

1155 Words
MIRA “Let me go, you bastard!” I shouted, wriggling my wrist in his grasp, but it only tightened. At this point, shouting and begging were pointless. He didn’t listen in the past. There would be no difference now. He gripped my neck, pinning me against the wall. Then his cold voice reverberated. “You think you can run from me, huh? In your dreams, Mira. You’re mine. Stop hiding. I’ll always find you, Mira.” I snorted, gazing into his emotionless, cold-blooded eyes. “I’d rather be a corpse than be the devil’s bride, Roman. You should wake up from your dream.” His grip tightened on my neck at my statement. I choked and coughed incessantly. I expected the bastard to let me go in that condition, but he didn’t. Instead, he kept tightening his hold around my neck. “You would rather die than stay with me, huh?” he deadpanned. “Then I’ll do you the honor of being my bride in the world beyond.” “Ro… Ro… man…” I coughed after every sound, gripping his hand. I dug my nails into it, hoping that would make him let go, but it didn’t happen. I felt my strength leaving me and my vision growing blurry. “What?” A sinister smirk appeared on his lips, and his eyes darkened. “You want me to keep you alive when you don’t want to be with me? No, wifey. Things don’t work that way.” He groaned into my ear and tightened his grip even more. “Don’t hurt me, Roman. Let me go,” I shouted, gripping the bedspread and trying to pull myself out of this nightmare, but it seemed the more I tried, the deeper I sank into it. “No!” I screamed, jolting out of my sleep. “Mira!” Zara’s voice wafted into my ears, pulling me back to reality faster. “Calm down. Nobody can hurt you now. You’re safe with me,” she assured me, cupping my face. My chest heaved up and down as my eyes scrutinized the room. It appeared strange at first, but as the tension I woke up with subsided, I realized I was at home. Not in Roman’s house, and he wasn’t beside me. However, the hair on the nape of my neck stood erect. It felt like I was being watched. Like he was in the same room with me even though I couldn’t see him. Zara held my hands and stared into my eyes. “It’s just a dream, Mira. Roman isn’t here. Nobody will be able to hurt you here,” she assured me, squeezing my hands, but my heart wouldn’t stop racing no matter what. I was certain that was him. What was the dream about? To warn me? To tell me he was watching me? Or to confirm my suspicions? The more I thought about it, the more goosebumps covered my skin. Zara released my hands and poured me a glass of water. Thankfully, we both had the habit of keeping a jug of water beside the bed before sleeping. She handed the glass to me, and I downed it in a jiffy. That also contributed to the little calm I felt afterward. “What’s wrong, Mira? You’ve been acting weird since we returned from the club.” She broke the silence after watching me for fifteen minutes. She settled beside me, staring at me intently. “You haven’t spoken a word since I found you outside the club yesterday, and you also had a terrible fever overnight,” she continued. “Your nightmares have also returned. What the hell did you see last night?” My throat bobbed as I stared back at her, trying to find my voice. The truth—his name—felt extremely heavy to pronounce. What if I mentioned his name and he appeared again? As if sensing my fear, she rested her hands on my shoulders and slowly rubbed them down until she held my hands in hers. “You can open up to me, love. It’s just us here,” she mumbled. “Nobody else is here with us.” “I saw him, Zara.” My tone held fear and anxiety, and at the same time, my eyes fell on the door. My breath hitched, hoping it wouldn’t open and he wouldn’t walk in. “Who did you see?” “The man in my nightmares.” I swallowed the sob clogging my throat. “Roman Monroe.” I held her hands and leaned forward. “The demon who has been chasing me has finally caught up with me, Zara.” My voice and hands trembled violently. “Let’s relocate, Zara… let’s leave here.” “Calm down, Mira,” she mumbled, nodding her head. “Calm down.” “He has found me. I… I want to… to leave here, Zara.” My head shook. “We… we can’t stay here anymore.” “You have to listen to me, Mira.” She gripped my arms. “You have to—” “Za… ra, I… I think we should really ru—” “Mira!” she snapped, causing me to stare at her properly. My lips pursed, and I swallowed hard. She palmed my face and leaned her head forward. “Listen to me, girl.” I nodded. “Now, take a deep breath and let it out slowly.” I did as she instructed. Then she pressed her forehead against mine. “You’re safe, Mira. Whether the one you saw was him or not, he can’t harm you,” she muttered, her tone filled with assurance and conviction. I could only nod in response. “We’re not leaving here.” My lips parted, but as if she knew I wanted to argue, she cut me off. “We’re not leaving, Mira. If there’s anyone who should run, it’s him,” she said. “You didn’t do anything wrong. He’s the one who hurt you. He mocked you and trampled on you. He should feel this way, not you.” Leaning back, she cupped my face. “You can’t keep running, Mira. We can’t keep running. Maybe his appearance is telling you something. Maybe it’s telling you it’s time to face your fears. Maybe it’s time to move on.” She smiled softly. “It’s been two years, love. It’s really time to move on. Face it. Fear is just an illusion. Make it bend to your will.” Tears rolled down my face at that moment. I broke into a soft sob and lowered my head. “I… I’m trying, Zara. I just seem to be stuck somewhere with him.” She wrapped her arms around me and caressed my back slowly. “It’s fine. Healing doesn’t come easily. Don’t push yourself, girl. You’ve got this,” she whispered.
