Chapter 9 - Damn Blood

896 Words
NOLAN I stared at the dim light as yesterday’s events replayed in my head. The fear in the strange woman’s eyes and the way she trembled at my touch, like I was some sort of fire or sword. It was weird at first, but not after I remembered I had a brother. Then I persisted. I kept moving closer to her even though she clearly declared war and enmity between us. I just wanted to know how much she hated Roman, and from her reaction, it was glaring that her hatred for him was unquantifiable, even though she was scared of him. Just what did my brother do to her? What did he do to earn so much hatred from a woman like her? Thinking about the whole s**t, I couldn’t help but laugh. Why the hell was I also feigning ignorance? If Roman could do this to me, his own twin brother, what else couldn’t he do to others? He was ruthless and callous. It was just frustrating that I also had to inherit the hatred he planted, and that was because we looked alike. Damn the blood we shared. Damn this identical twin s**t. It was exhausting being his brother. Now I had to start explaining myself to some woman? To start telling her I wasn’t the man she hated? “Here. Your wine,” Veronica, my girlfriend, muttered, stretching a glass of wine toward me. Without sparing her a glance, I took it from her, and a snort escaped my throat as the woman’s face appeared in my head again. She looked feisty and fragile at the same time. Roman must have broken her wings and shown her where she belonged, probably somewhere beneath him, just as he had done with me. “What’s up? Did something happen?” Veronica walked back to the table and rested against it. “Tell me, dude. What’s the gist?” “Nothing,” I muttered and sipped the wine, turning my attention to her. “It’s just some woman I saved at the club yesterday. She seems…” Veronica slammed the glass of wine onto the table and scurried toward me before I could finish my statement. She towered over me and grabbed my shirt aggressively. I flinched, startled by the sudden movement. Then she leaned forward. Her eyes burned with fury and jealousy. “I dare you to repeat that again,” she grunted, her tone filled with threat and warning. I swallowed. “Whi… which statement?” “The b***h you just mentioned, dude. That f*****g bitch.” “I… I didn’t do anything with her. I just saved her from some bad guy.” She burst into mocking laughter, releasing my shirt and stepping backward. For a few seconds, my brows creased as I watched her. I’d always known Veronica to be a jealous woman, but I didn’t expect it to be this extreme. Whenever she acted like this, I usually just stayed calm and let her vent her anger, but seeing how exasperated she was right now, I didn’t think I would be able to endure her countless smacks until she calmed down. Her laughter died abruptly, and then she began to clap. “Whoa! Who are you? A messiah?” she asked and laughed again. “You saved a woman? What are you bragging about, Nolan? You can’t even save your own ass,” she muttered amidst her laughter. I didn’t expect less from her. That was what I made everyone believe—that I couldn’t save myself in dangerous moments. That I was weak and undependable. No wonder she laughed when I mentioned saving a woman. She towered over me and grabbed my shirt again. She jerked me closer, her dagger-like glare piercing into mine. My throat bobbed as my lashes flickered. “Don’t lie to me, Nolan. Who is the bastard making you smile subconsciously?” she growled. I blinked and stared back at her for a few seconds. “I… I’m not lying to you, Vero. I… I really saved somebody, but it was just sheer luck. The predator was heavily drunk, so it was easy to knock him out with a stone,” I lied, making my voice as shaky as possible. She didn’t say anything for a brief moment. She inspected my eyes as if she could tell whether my words were lies or not. Then she scoffed. “Don’t forget, Nolan. You are mine. If it’s not me, then it’s nobody else.” My lips curved into a smirk as my hands clutched her waist and pulled her closer. I twirled her back against me before she could react. She gasped, her eyes widening in shock. “You…” “Worry not, darling. I owe you my life and loyalty,” I whispered breathlessly before capturing her lips with mine. She didn’t hold back. She wrapped her arms around my neck almost immediately, like she had been expecting me. My grin widened as I slipped my tongue into her mouth. If only Veronica knew I was the one controlling her and not the other way around. Fortunately for her, I still needed her to act like the boss over me. That was the only way I could keep a low profile. That was the only way to make everyone believe I was really a foo
