“Sounds like karma for all the teasing you do,” commented Irene, a smirk tugging at her lips. “Then, what did your best friend say?”
“He laughed hard before even helping me. That asshole,” Jackson replied, and although he stated a curse, he grinned. “But you know what? The fear didn’t last.”
Jackson turned his face toward Irene, looking her in the eye. “The more I faced the darkness, the less power it had over me.”
Irene considered his words, glancing at the vast surroundings beyond their shelter. Maybe, just maybe, she could do the same.
For now, she focused on the warmth of Misty in her arms and the steady presence of Jackson nearby, letting herself believe that they would make it through the night.
