Luna
Dealing with painful memories is not just tough but sometimes tormenting too. And I’ve been dealing with such memories frequently these days. Work is the only thing that keeps my mind off such things but I guess this guy has pledged to not leave me alone here too.
He was still holding out the small piece of wood, a smitten-by-his-words teenage me had given him. The question was, why was he still holding on to it when he was the one to end things between us?
‘I’m busy. Please take it to someone else.’ I replied to his request to carve it as curtly as possible.
‘There’s no one else who can put in the emotion to bring this piece alive other than you.’ Here we go again. He was trying to do something and I had no bloody idea, what? But I didn’t have the patience to know. So I took the wood from his hand and threw it as far as I could.
‘Luna!’ He shouted.
‘What? You can throw away our relationship like that and I can’t even throw a piece of wood?’ hands fisted to the sides, I could barely hold my anger.
‘As far as I remember you were the one…’
‘I don’t want to hear anything. Leave!’
‘Luna...’
‘Go away right now or I’ll call the cops.’ He moved forward maybe to hold my hand but Gina stopped him.
‘You heard her. Leave her alone Sole.’ With hurt in his eyes he gave me one last look before going towards his car and then driving away.
Gina and I got back into the store. She closed the curtains as we entered my cabin. ‘What does he want?’ She asked.
‘I wish I knew.’ I said rubbing my temples.
‘Don’t worry too much. I’ll ask around from my sources to see why he’s back.’
‘Do whatever you want.’
‘I think you need someone to take your mind off things.’ She said and took out her phone to send a text. ‘Hope you have something nice to wear.’
‘Why?’ She motioned for me to check my phone and I did. There was a text from her. ‘Movie tickets?’ I looked at her, how she can think of going to a movie right now.
‘Hmm. For you and Dave.’
My head shot up from the phone screen. ‘Dave?’
‘Both of you are going to a movie date tonight. Please wear clothes of your age.’
‘Movie date? And what’s wrong with my clothes?’
‘Seriously…Have you seen the way you dress?’ The face she made, it me look in the full length mirror in my cabin. The business suit that I wore did make my shoulders look broader than they were and my waistline seemed different too. She was right; I did not look like a twenty-three year old. But I didn’t look old, just mature than before. I guess the difficult circumstances do that to you.
About seven o’clock in the evening I reached the movie theatre in clothes chosen by none other than Gina, which is why they were a bit…too much. The off-shoulder white cotton top was tucked in the blue and black checkered skirt which was short enough to show off my slender legs, maybe low-key I was enjoying wearing it.
Dave had texted me that he was running a bit late so I would have to go in alone, which I did and took my seat as soon as I found it. Soon lights went off and the movie began. I got another text from Dave which said it would take him another twenty minutes to reach which made me sigh, why bother agreeing for a movie date when you don’t have time? I thought.
But after five minutes or so the seat next to me was occupied. ‘I thought you were running late?’ I asked him.
‘Now I’m not.’ He whispered. ‘Popcorn?’ He offered and I eat some from the box he’d bought.
I concentrated on the movie since there wasn’t much we could talk about while there was so much noise and it made me realize that I really did grew up soon. It had been so long that I’d set foot in a movie theatre. With my uncle and aunt and their constant pressure and opening the store and running it, there wasn’t much time for myself anyways.
It was when I laughed too hard at a simple joke a character had cracked that Dave said, ‘Seems like you’re watching a movie after a long time?’
‘Of course, where in the world do I have time to enjoy life?’
‘Why, breaking up with me didn’t give you the freedom and money that you wanted?’ That was the moment when I realized I’d been deceived by the dark and dim surroundings. The guy sitting next to me wasn’t Dave.
‘What are you doing here?’ I asked in horror.
‘Enjoying my date.’ I closed my eyes only to open them again seconds later. This guy was unbelievable. I stood up and made a beeline to the exit, he obviously followed.
When outside, I could see he was dressed for a date which meant he knew I was going to be here. ‘How did you know where I was?’
‘Let’s just say, my secretary is quite efficient.’
‘I don’t care how efficient she is, but getting someone’s private information is illegal and called stalking.’
‘Fine. I am stalking you. But that is because you’ve left me with no choice.’
‘Huh?’
‘If you would run away from me every time I try to talk to you, then I wouldn’t need to find other methods to spend time with you.’
He was smiling and it was bothering me to another extent. ‘Now that we’re here why don’t we go out to eat?’
‘Why are you back, Sole?’ I asked with a serious face. There was no more merry-go-round happening here anymore.
He looked at me admiringly and then took my hand in his, saying, ‘I want you back in my life.’
Immediately I pulled back my hand with more force than was required. He felt the jerk and was surprised. ‘You think after making me suffer like that three years ago only to come back now with a handful of sweet words is going to make everything fine again?’
‘I’m sorry I made you suffer?’ He looked taken aback.
‘Then was it me?’ I asked astonished.
‘Of course. Things ended between us because of you and now you blame me. I was there for you when you needed to fight your family, I was there when you needed emotional support and I was there to make sure you weren’t lonely…..I was even ready to spent the rest of my life with you!’
‘But you didn’t. Not only did you back out from our wedding but you also deserted me when I needed you the most. You weren’t there in life’s most crucial moment with me Sole. You just left, ruining everything behind you.’
Wiping the tear that was halfway down my cheek I made my way out to the main road and looked for a cab which did come soon after. Sparing no glance to the one I left behind I let my tears have a free-fall as the cab driver drove me away from the theatre.
