CHAPTER 003

1153 Words
STEVIE HARRINGTON A few days later, I had tried to reason with Devon, but he seemed to be a dickhead. After bantering with him, he finally let me follow him out. I guessed he was going to meet his fellow Mafia gang. While we were on the go, his phone kept ringing, but he seemed to be ignoring it. "Aren't you going to pick the call?" I asked him, and I noticed his uneasiness while the phone rang. "Put your phone on silent then," I said, and he immediately put his phone on silent. After a long drive, we got to a big mansion. I got down from the car as he did the same. "You should stay here. You can't come in," he said, turning to face me. "I obviously cannot stay outside. The driver is already outside. I'm your PA, and I should be by your side," I said firmly. He scoffed and nodded. "Aight then, come in... I'll need a distance of ten steps away." I nodded and sluggishly followed him. We walked into the living room through the main entrance door, and as I closed the door, he turned to me. "Stand here," he ordered, and I had no choice but to obey. He walked towards the other guys who were having a drink. Immediately they sighted him; one of them called out to him, "D is here!" Although the voices were faint because of the distance, I could hear them. "We heard about your situation... how sad," one of them said, and I could tell they were indirectly teasing him, as a loud laugh followed. "So, who's the unlucky girl? Is she pretty?" one of them asked. "Man, can't believe you guys called me out here to tease me. I am already in a tight corner as it is. You should be helping out," I heard him say. "Answer the question first." "I don't know. Would you like to see for yourself?" he asked them, and I'm sure they nodded. He flicked his fingers twice—I already knew he was calling for me. I got mad, because it could be embarrassing to stand in front of those guys. He could have just given them any reply. "How immature," I scoffed under my breath as I walked towards them. "Is she—?" one of them couldn't finish the sentence, as Devon nodded and waved his hand, signaling me to leave. But as I wanted to leave, one of them suddenly grabbed my arm, pulling me closer. "Would you consider marrying me instead of Devon?" he said, using his finger to raise my face up to his. Then he bent down, sniffing my neck. Annoyed by his actions, I slapped him and walked away, leaving them amazed. "My kind of woman," one of them said, and they laughed. I slammed the door hard on my way out, to notify them of my anger. I walked into the car and sat on the passenger seat in front. I sat there fuming. "You should get used to it," the driver said, breaking the silence, and I turned to face him. "What?" "Whatever happened in there. You should know Devon by now, and the rest of them are just like him. Maybe they could be even worse," he said, and I nodded. "How did you feel about Big Peterson's wish?" he asked, and I let out a big sigh. "I personally feel it's impossible," I said, and he laughed slightly. "Honestly, I just want to work for the two years and get the f**k out of it all. At least I should fulfill one of Big Peterson's wishes," I said, and he nodded. "Devon will come around," he assured me. "The name's Angel," he said, as if he knew I was curious about it. And just as I was about to say mine, he cut in: "It's Stevie. C'mon, everyone now knows your name." I laughed, and just then the door slammed shut. I knew Devon had just gotten out. "You would make a good couple," Angel said, and I glared daggers at him as he got out to open the door for Devon. "What was that you did in there?" Devon said coldly as he entered the car. "Good two hours spent. Anywhere else you wanna be?" I replied, ignoring what he said. "Did you just ignore me?" he said, and I could feel his temper boiling. "Was I supposed to reply?" I asked, turning back to face him. "How come you guys have no respect for women? You let your friend disrespect me while you sat there and watched." "I just hope you know I wouldn't be here by now if Big Peterson had not made that kind of wish," I said angrily, and everywhere went silent as we drove home. As soon as we got home, I got down, a hint of anger on my face as I walked into my quarters. Sarah came running to me. "What's up? I heard you went out with him. Any update?" she asked, curiosity taking over her. We both walked into my room, and I began lashing out. I stopped when I saw how shocked she was at how I was blabbing in anger. "You should calm down. Everyone already knows how annoying Devon is. Since you are off-limits for him, you should try challenging him. And who knows? You might change him," Sarah said, and I laughed slightly. "You think someone like that would change? I'm not even concerned about his change. If he decides to give me a hard time, I'll make sure to reciprocate it," I said, and we both laughed. I got up. "Going somewhere?" Sarah asked as she saw me putting on my sneakers, and I nodded. "Got a meeting with the lawyer," I said as I opened my door. "You'll never agree to this, will you?" Sarah said, and I crossed both hands in the air, meaning "never," and I left. Angel drove me—after much pleading—to the lawyer's office, and as soon as I walked in, the lawyer welcomed me with a cup of coffee. I collected it and placed it on the table. "I wish I was in the right frame of mind to drink coffee," I said as I sat down. I could tell he smiled a little behind me before coming to sit beside me. "Why didn't you talk Big Peterson out of it?" I asked as I faced him, and he turned his face away. "You know I'll always choose what's best for you," he said, placing his hands on my shoulders, which I gently removed as I walked to his window. "At the expense of what? Huh? I know Big Peterson knew we were a thing, so why… wait," I paused as I turned to face him, realizing something. He was avoiding eye contact with me.
