Liz’s POV
I led David into the lobby, past a sleeping Bernard. It was only mid-afternoon, but I didn’t want to disturb him, so we crept quietly up the stairs. When we got to my floor, I could hear noises coming down the hall from Daniel’s room that sounded more like video games than online classes. Not that I cared either way, because at least it meant he wouldn’t bother me for a while. Though on the other hand, if he saw me with David, maybe he would leave me alone for good.
I pulled David into my room and shut the door. I could feel that he was standing right behind me, our bodies nearly touching. I turned to look up into his magnetic stare. In the dim light that slanted into the room, his chocolate eyes deepened to a color more like fresh brewed coffee. He was only seventeen, but he was already at least a foot taller than me.
He placed his hand firmly against the door beside my head and leaned in until our noses almost touched. I couldn’t breathe, even if I had wanted to. His body was radiating heat, warming my icy flesh with his close proximity. His scent overwhelmed me, even without breathing, and I noticed his dog smell was mingled with wet grass and petrichor. It was surprisingly pleasant.
With his other hand, he brushed my hair back from my face. His touch was both gentle and sensual, and my skin tingled from the light caress. With the same hand, he grabbed the back of my neck and before I could think to stop him, he leaned in and kissed me roughly, urgently, fervently. His taste was heavenly, and I was momentarily drowning in his aromas and flavors. His lips were like velvet, slightly parted, and ready to devour every part of me.
When I parted my lips in response, he breathed into my mouth, spreading his heat into me. It spread through my body like wildfire, burning through my lifeless veins, igniting an unfamiliar heat between my legs. He pressed his body to mine, and I could feel his arousal rub against me. I gasped suddenly, and, with an immense amount of control, managed to push him away from me. His eyes were black with lust and desire.
“David, stop,” I gasped. I was confused and concerned by my body’s reaction, but I had something a little more dire on my mind just now.
“Why?” he asked blankly, “I want you. I thought you wanted me too.”
“I do, but you’re only seventeen,” I answered, trying to keep my voice even. Now that I had tasted him and felt his lips against mine, my desire was harder to control. I needed him, in a way I had never needed anyone before.
“So?” he asked. He furrowed his brow.
“So, you’re underage,” I explained with a sigh.
“That’s what you’re concerned about?” he laughed with relief. “I’ll be eighteen in a few days.”
“But you’re not eighteen now, and it just doesn’t feel right to…” I paused, choosing my next words carefully, “be intimate with a minor.”
“I guess,” he sighed, reluctantly.
“Anyway,” I continued, looking down, “Don’t you want to save yourself, you know, for whoever your mate might be?”
I couldn’t bear the thought of him with another woman, though I knew I didn’t have the right. We still barely knew each other, so why did I feel like he belonged to me? We were from two different worlds that would not, could not, collide. Some werewolves merely tolerate vampires, and vice versa. Even those were rare exceptions. Most werewolves, including David’s pack, loathed my kind, and for good reason. Over a hundred years ago, my coven used to hunt werewolves for sport. The packs were smaller then, and less organized, making them an easier target.
He didn’t say anything, but I could feel him staring at me. His silence worried me, and eventually I was drawn back to those dark, brooding eyes.
“What?” I huffed.
“Isn’t it obvious?” he asked blatantly.
“Isn’t what obvious?” I prodded, a pinch perturbed.
“I’m pretty sure you’re my mate,” he answered softly, his voice heavy as his eyes bore into mine.
“Mate?” I asked breathlessly, incredulous. That would explain the instant and undeniable connection, if it were true. “How is that possible? And how can you be sure when you don’t have your wolf yet?”
“I don’t know, Liz,” he replied. His voice was soft, but his face was twisted in anguish. He sat backwards onto the bed and put his face in his hands. “But we’ll find out for sure on Friday.”
“That’s your birthday?” I asked quietly. I went to the bed and sat next to him, but not close enough to touch him. I didn’t quite trust my self-control right now, nor his.
“Yeah,” he lifted his head and smiled at me sadly, “There’s going to be a big party. I wish you could come.”
“You know that’s not possible,” I smiled reassuringly, but I was sad too that I couldn’t be with him as much as I wanted.
“Maybe when I become Alpha, I can change things for the better,” he said wistfully.
“Maybe. But what if you can’t?” I asked. I didn’t want to put his hopes down, but he needed a plan in case things didn’t go the way he wanted.
“Then I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it,” he sighed. Then he patted my leg as he stood, “Well, I should probably get going, before anyone starts to get worried.”
“How did you manage to escape in the first place?” I asked with cheerful curiosity. I stood and walked him to the door.
“I said I was going for a run,” he answered with a sinister smile.
We opened the door and found Daniel coming down the hall, on his way to the stairs. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw David and me, a vast range of emotions playing over his face in the span of a few minutes.
“Um, David, this is Daniel,” I introduced them awkwardly, “He lives here, I guess.”
David’s POV
I didn’t like him one bit, from the first second I saw him, but I had no idea why. As far as I knew, he had done nothing wrong to me. There was an uncanny familiarity to him that I couldn’t quite place, but I didn’t really care. Liz looked annoyed to see him, but on the contrary, he looked very excited to see her. She was on my left, which was the direction he was coming from. He eyed her up and down hungrily, ignoring me completely.
“Liz, you’re looking ravenous this evening!” he told her exuberantly, as he strided toward her confidently.
Before I thought about what I was doing, I stepped in front of her and let out a low growl, baring my teeth menacingly. He stopped suddenly, as if he had run into something. Fear filled his eyes, but was quickly replaced by defensive anger.
“David,” Liz spoke my name softly, placing a calming hand on my back.
“Easy, dude,” Daniel said, raising his hands in surrender, “I didn’t realize you two were a thing. My bad.”
I did not feel reassured. His words felt like a facade, spoken purely out of fear and meant only to pacify me. My blood boiled at the thought of this sleazebag living down the hall from my Liz. Not that I feared for her safety, I knew full well that she could defend herself just fine. But I didn’t want this man, or any other, to even look at her with any kind of lust or attraction.
As I thought about it, I felt a strange heat rip through my body. The hairs of my arms and legs stood on end and a fire spread through my veins. I could feel my bones start to twist and shift painfully and I was gripped by panic.
No! Not now! It was too soon, and there was a mortal present. Even as he began retreating back to his room, true fear in his eyes now, I knew I had to get out of there as quickly as possible. I didn’t waste any time and bolted for the stairs. I dashed down and out of the building at an inhuman speed, ignoring Liz as she called my name behind me.
