Chapter 1
Rain had always made Maya Thompson feel alive.
While everyone else hurried beneath umbrellas, she loved the quiet rhythm of raindrops against the pavement.
They seemed to wash away the noise of the city, leaving behind a strange kind of peace.
That Tuesday morning, however, the rain felt different.
It was heavier. Colder.
Almost as if it carried a warning.
Maya stood beneath the small awning outside the publishing company where she worked, clutching a folder tightly to her chest.
Inside were the final edits for the biggest project of her career
Months of sleepless nights, missed weekends, and endless revisions had all led to this day.
"Don't mess this up," she whispered to herself.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped into the rain.
Across the busy street, a man in a charcoal-grey coat hurried toward a coffee shop, balancing an umbrella in one hand and a laptop bag in the other. His attention was fixed on his ringing phone.
He never noticed the speeding cyclist racing toward the intersection.
Maya did.
"Watch out!" she shouted.
The man looked up just in time.
Startled, he stumbled backward.
The cyclist swerved sharply, missing him by inches before disappearing into traffic.
The man's umbrella slipped from his hand and landed in a puddle.
For a moment, everything stood still.
Then he laughed.
It wasn't a nervous laugh. It was genuine, warm, and surprisingly contagious.
"You just saved me from becoming tomorrow' s headline," he said as he picked up the umbrella.
Maya couldn't help smiling.
"I was hoping to save your laptop, too."
He glanced at the soaked bag hanging from his shoulder and sighed dramatically.
"I think the laptop may have sacrificed itself."
She laughed.
"My name' s Maya."
He extended his hand.
"Ethan Brooks."
Their hands met for only a second.
Neither of them knew that this chance encounter, on an ordinary rainy morning, would change both their lives in ways they could never imagine.
Sometimes love doesn't arrive with grand gestures or perfect timing.
Sometimes...
It begins with a warning shouted across the street.
