Chapter 7:Connection

822 Words
Two Hours Later Jenny Chen's mother lived in a small apartment in Koreatown. She was smaller than Maddy expected—a tiny woman in her sixties, gray-haired, fragile-looking. But her eyes were sharp. "Dr. Lin," she said, opening the door. "I recognize you from the news." Vera flinched slightly but recovered quickly. "Mrs. Chen. This is Detective Cole." They sat in the small living room. Photos everywhere—Jenny as a child, Jenny in her graduation gown, Jenny holding her baby daughter. "Tell us about Jenna," Maddy said gently. Mrs. Chen's eyes filled with tears. "She was Jenny's best friend. They met in middle school and were inseparable after that. Jenna used to come over for dinner, sleep over on weekends. She was like another daughter to me." "When did she disappear?" "Summer before senior year. They'd just gotten back from some trip—I don't remember where. A few days later, Jenna was just... gone." Mrs. Chen wiped her eyes. "Jenny was devastated. She looked for her for years. Joined online groups. Hired private investigators. Spent money she didn't have." "Did she ever find anything?" "No. Nothing." Mrs. Chen shook her head. "Until about a year ago. She said she'd found a lead—something about a website, or a forum. I didn't understand the details. But she was excited. Hopeful for the first time in years." "A lead to what?" Vera leaned forward. "Where Jenna was? What happened to her?" "I don't know. She wouldn't tell me. Said it was too dangerous, that I shouldn't know." Mrs. Chen's voice cracked. "I should have pushed harder. Maybe if I had—" "Mrs. Chen." Maddy's voice was gentle but firm. "Do you have any of Jenny's old files? Her computer? Her notes?" "She had a laptop. The police took it after she—" Mrs. Chen stopped. Swallowed. "After she died. I don't know if they found anything." Maddy made a note. "We'll check." The Breakthrough, Part Two Back at the station, Maddy put in a rush request for Jenny Chen's laptop. While she waited, she pulled up everything she could find on Jenna Park's disappearance. Fourteen years old. Minimal information. A missing person report filed by her parents, then withdrawn three days later. Withdrawn. That was strange. Maddy dug deeper. The parents had withdrawn the report because they'd received a letter from Jenna. Handwritten. Postmarked from another state. In it, Jenna said she was fine, that she'd run away voluntarily, that she didn't want to be found. Case closed. But something about it bothered Maddy. A seventeen-year-old runs away, writes one letter, and then never contacts her family again? Never uses her Social Security number? Never gets a driver's license? Never shows up in any database anywhere? It was possible. Kids disappeared all the time. But it was also possible— Her phone rang. Forensics. "We found something on Jenny Chen's laptop," the tech said. "Encrypted files. Took us a while to crack them." "What's in them?" "Photos. Documents. Looks like she was investigating something. Investigating someone." A pause. "You're gonna want to see this." The Morgue, Again Maddy found Vera in the same spot as before—sitting on the floor, back against the wall. But this time, she wasn't alone. A man stood in the corner, watching her with concern. "Dr. Lin?" Maddy approached carefully. Vera looked up. "Detective Cole. This is my... my brother. My cousin. Whatever." She waved vaguely. "He's a doctor." The man stepped forward, offered his hand. "Marcus Lin. I'm a dentist, actually. Not much help with dead people." His smile was warm but worried. "Vera called me. She sounded... not like herself." "I'm fine," Vera said automatically. Then, quieter: "I'm not fine. But I'm dealing." Maddy pulled up a chair. "We found something. On Jenny's laptop." Vera straightened. "What?" "She was investigating something. Someone. Looks like she'd been at it for about a year." Maddy paused. "She was investigating a group. A website. Something called 'The Circle.'" Vera's face went pale. "The Circle?" "You've heard of it?" "I've seen it." Vera stood up slowly. "It's a forum. An online community for people who've lost someone. People looking for answers." She swallowed. "I've been a member for years." Maddy stared at her. "You and Jenny Chen were on the same forum? Looking for the same person?" "I don't know. I never talked to her there. I used a different name. Different identity." Vera ran her hands through her hair. "But if she found something—if she found a lead—" "She might have gotten too close." Maddy finished the thought. "And someone silenced her." The room was very quiet. "We need to find out who else was on that forum," Maddy said. "Who Jenny was talking to. What she found." Vera nodded. "I can help. I know the community. I know how it works." "For once," Maddy said, "I'm glad you're involved."
