CHAPTER TWO

1708 Words
Desperate to survive, Elena took every last dollar she had saved from helping grandma out, from skipping meals she couldn’t afford, and poured it all into a small clothing brand, her hands shook when she registered the business name, her heart beat fast because this was it, her last hope, her only way to start over without begging anyone, without lowering her eyes for pity, she called it “Hart & Thread”, simple, honest, like her, she imagined a shop with warm lights on South Side, fabrics that felt like safety, customers who walked in broken and walked out standing taller, she stayed up nights learning how to cut patterns from YouTube, her fingers bled from needles, her eyes burned from sewing machines, but she smiled through it because for the first time her life felt like hers, like something she built, not something life forced on her, The first three months felt like magic, orders came in small but steady, girls on i********: loved her designs, simple, bold, clothes that didn’t scream but whispered confidence, she delivered packages herself, took the Red Line across Chicago with sweat on her neck and hope in her chest, every sale felt like proof that she wasn’t useless, that she could make something out of nothing, she told herself this was the beginning, that poverty was about to end, that she would never have to choose between rent and food again, she even allowed herself to dream, a boutique on 79th Street, a team of tailors, maybe one day her grandmother would see her name on a billboard and feel very proud of the young girl she raised But Chicago showed her no mercy, suppliers increased prices overnight, rent for her tiny workspace in Pilsen doubled, customers started delaying payments, some disappeared completely after collecting clothes, she borrowed money to restock, then borrowed again to cover rent, the debt piled up like bricks on her chest, she worked harder, slept less, ate only ramen and peanut butter, but the numbers kept bleeding red, one bad month became two, two became four, until the day her last sewing machine was taken by the landlord, her fabrics were seized, her i********: page was hacked, everything she built collapsed in silence, no noise, no warning, just emptiness. She stood in the empty shop with dust on her feet and tears she refused to cry, twenty-five years old, broke, emotionally exhausted, too tired to even feel pain anymore, the city felt louder outside, traffic honking, sirens screaming, life moving fast for everyone except her, she was a ghost in a place that had no space for the weak, for the ones who tried and failed, she walked home that night with nothing in her hands, nothing in her account, nothing left except pride she could barely hold up. Days passed, then weeks, she survived on favors from neighbors, on plates of mac and cheese grandma sent over, on silent prayers she wasn’t sure anyone heard, shame wrapped around her like a second skin, every time someone asked “how’s the business” she smiled and said “it’s growing”,while inside she was breaking, breaking, breaking. That was when she stumbled across it, scrolling through her phone at 2am with zero data left, a job posting, simple words that felt like a rope thrown to a drowning woman, Personal Secretary Needed For Gray Sterling. The name made her pause, Gray Sterling, billionaire, CEO, the man whose face was on Forbes and gossip blogs, dangerously handsome, arrogant, cold, reckless, the kind of man mothers warned their daughters about, women followed him everywhere, i********: models, actresses, socialites, but none stayed long, because Gray didn’t do attachment, didn’t do love, didn’t do forever. It was rumored that his mother abandoned him and his father when he was just a boy, left them for a new life in Europe, and since then Gray grew up believing love was a transaction, that people only stayed if they had something to gain, so to him women were distractions, temporary entertainment, nothing more, just bodies and games and nights that ended before morning. Unknown to Elena, Gray had just fired his last personal secretary two weeks ago, the girl got pregnant for him, scandal exploded inside Sterling Global Holdings, board members were angry, media was sniffing around, so now the company needed someone new urgently, someone quiet, someone who could handle pressure and keep her mouth shut. Elena stared at the application link for ten minutes, her finger hovering over submit, pride told her not to, fear told her she wasn’t qualified, but hunger was louder, rent was due in four days, her stomach was empty, her pride couldn’t feed her, so she clicked, typed her CV with shaking hands, wrote a cover letter that was honest but careful, hit send, and immediately regretted it. “What if I'm not offered the job” “What if I'm tagged a fraud” “Will I be arrested again?” Gray was moved by the passport attached to the letter, he wasn’t looking for skill, he was looking for someone he could control and have in his bed at the same time, someone desperate enough to play his games, he told HR to call her in, he saw it as another round, another woman to break. Neither of them knew their lives were about to collide in the most destructive way possible, neither of them knew this job would ruin them, rebuild them, destroy every wall they hid behind. The morning of the interview, Elena wore her only good dress, black, simple, ironed three times because she couldn’t afford dry cleaning, she walked into Sterling Global Holdings downtown Chicago with her back straight even though her legs were shaking, marble floors, glass walls, air conditioning that felt like another world, receptionists looked at her like she didn’t belong, security checked her bag twice, but she kept her eyes forward, she had survived worse than stares. When they called her name, she walked into Gray’s office, and everything changed, the room was huge, cold, smelled like expensive cologne and power, Gray sat behind a desk bigger than her old workspace, suit tailored perfectly, blue eyes sexy as f**k, he didn’t stand up, didn’t smile, just looked at her like she was another problem he had to deal with. He expected another desperate girl, eyes full of greed, voice shaking with need, ready to do anything for money, ready to laugh at his bad jokes, ready to sleep with him for a promotion, but Elena walked in calm, elegant, completely unaffected by his presence, she didn’t fidget, didn’t lower her gaze, didn’t beg, she answered every question confidently, voice steady even when her heart was pounding, maintained eye contact without fear, without flinching. Her beauty caught him, yes, her skin, her eyes, the way she held herself, she was broke but did not forget to keep herself neat but it was her refusal to submit that truly unsettled him, made something twist in his chest he didn’t understand. During the interview Gray got bored, then cruel, he started asking inappropriate questions on purpose, suggestive words, tests disguised as jokes, he wanted to see if she was like every other woman who walked through that door, easy to buy, easy to manipulate, easy to break, he leaned forward, voice low, asked things no decent boss should ask, watching her reaction like she was another project. But Elena shocked him, she didn’t blush, didn’t laugh it off, didn’t pretend she didn’t hear, she looked him straight in the eyes and told him, calm but firm, that she came for work, not to sell herself, not for his games, not for his ego, her words cut through the room like glass. Gray’s ego took a direct hit, no one spoke to him like that, no one refused him, annoyed and strangely affected by her rejection, he decided to test her further, he offered her money indirectly, over a hundred thousand dollars, said it casually like it was nothing, expecting her to fold immediately, expecting her eyes to light up, expecting her to say yes. “Money will never buy my body or soul, nor will I sellu dignity” she said her voice firm, for the first time her hands didn't tremble. Gray felt something he hated, humiliation, by a woman, by someone who had nothing just beauty. He thought she was bluffing. Furious, wounded, confused by the fire she lit in him, he told her to leave his office, get out, he didn’t need her, he had hundreds of applications…… “f**k I'm screwed, I really needed this job ”she whispered That same night Gray went out partying with his wealthy friends as usual, expensive club in River North, bottles of champagne, women everywhere, but he was drunk and irritated, he couldn’t stop thinking about the girl who looked him in the eyes and said no, so he told them about her, about the interview, about how she rejected his money. None of them believed him, they laughed, clapped him on the back, said Gray Sterling, the man no woman refuses, the man who gets everything he wants, they mocked him, challenged his pride, said he was losing his charm, said maybe he was getting old. Driven by arrogance and a wounded ego he couldn’t swallow, Gray entered a bet with his friends worth millions, his mission became simple and dangerous, make Elena Hart fall into his bed, make her beg, make her break, one of his friends recorded the whole conversation on his phone as proof of the bet, laughter filled the room. The next morning Gray called Elena back, voice cold like nothing happened, offered her the secretary position, said HR would send details, Elena accepted because she desperately needed the money, because rent was due, because pride doesn’t feed you, Gray accepted because he planned to win, because losing wasn’t in his dictionary. Neither of them understood that this decision would slowly destroy the emotional walls they spent years building, walls of pride, walls of pain, walls of survival, and drag them into a fire neither of them was ready for
