MY HEART SKIPPED a beat, but I kept a straight face. “Where’s what?” I asked with a shrug. The trainer scanned around the area near his duffle bag. “My water bottle,” he said. I squinted, then thought for a second before raising my eyebrows. “Check the bathroom.” The trainer closed his eyes and tilted his head back. “Oh yeah. I forgot I left it there,” he said. “I’ll be back.” He jogged to the door and exited the gym. I exhaled, then went to the door myself and peeked into the hall. I hoped to see Sam, but he wasn’t there. Just stick to the plan, I thought, while ducking back inside the gym. I walked to a punching bag and threw six jabs. On my seventh jab, the trainer entered the gym with his water bottle in hand. I glanced at him, then continued assaulting the bag as he walked over.
