Chapter 2 - The Music Box

734 Words
The Maple Grove Autumn Festival arrived with the scent of cinnamon and roasted chestnuts. Every October, the quiet little town came alive. Colorful lanterns hung across the streets. Children laughed as they chased one another through piles of fallen leaves. Local musicians performed on every corner, while handmade crafts, paintings, and antique treasures filled dozens of wooden stalls. It was Naya's favorite day of the year. Not because she enjoyed crowds. But because the festival reminded her that simple things could still make people happy. She adjusted the paintings displayed inside her booth. Most of them captured Maple Grove in autumn. Golden forests. The old stone bridge. The lake glowing beneath the evening sun. Except for one. Hidden behind the others was another painting of the mysterious cherry blossom tree. She had almost left it at home. Almost. Something inside her had insisted she bring it. "...You're impossible," she muttered to herself with a smile. Across the festival... Kian finally finished his volunteer shift at the free medical tent. He stretched his shoulders before one of the nurses called out. "Doctor, you should enjoy the festival for once." "I am." "You've been checking blood pressure for four hours." He smiled. "That counts." "It doesn't." She laughed before pushing him toward the rows of festival stalls. "Go." Before he could protest... She disappeared into the crowd. Kian shook his head. "I guess I'm officially unemployed for the evening." Without any destination in mind... He wandered. A baker offered him warm apple pie. A child insisted he try a ring toss game. Someone handed him homemade caramel candy. This was Maple Grove. No one stayed a stranger for long. Then... A soft melody floated through the crisp autumn air. Delicate. Gentle. Almost... Painfully familiar. Kian stopped walking. The music wasn't coming from the stage. It came from an antique stall tucked beneath an old maple tree. The elderly owner smiled as Kian approached. "Beautiful, isn't it?" Kian nodded. "What song is that?" The old man looked down at the tiny wooden music box turning slowly in his hands. "I don't know." "You don't?" "It has never had a name." Kian frowned. "I've heard it before." The old man chuckled. "No, son." "I haven't played it all day." Kian stared at the spinning ballerina inside the music box. His chest tightened. For a brief moment... He wasn't standing at the festival anymore. He was somewhere else. Soft pink petals drifted through the wind. Someone laughed. A girl's voice echoed in the distance. "Nino!" His vision blurred. Then— Everything disappeared. The music stopped. Kian blinked rapidly. His breathing had become uneven. "You alright?" the old man asked gently. "...Yeah." But he wasn't. Not at all. Only a few stalls away... Naya suddenly froze. She lifted her head. "Do you hear that?" she asked the woman in the neighboring booth. "Hear what?" "The music..." The woman frowned. "What music?" Naya looked around. The melody had already vanished. Yet her heart continued racing. Without understanding why... Her feet began moving. One step. Then another. Almost as though she were following something invisible. She walked through the crowd. Past the food stalls. Past the lanterns. Past laughing families. Until... She reached the antique stall. The music box sat quietly on the wooden table. No longer playing. Naya stared at it. "...It's beautiful." The elderly shopkeeper smiled warmly. "Would you like to hold it?" As soon as it touched her hands... A single image flashed through her mind. A young man. Standing beneath falling cherry blossoms. His face remained hidden. But his smile... It felt like home. Her fingers trembled. The music box slipped. Before it could hit the ground— Another hand caught it. Steady. Warm. "So careful," a calm voice said. Naya looked up. For the first time... Their eyes met. Silence. The festival noise faded into the background. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them looked away. It lasted only a few seconds. Yet somehow... It felt like a lifetime. Kian was the first to break the silence. "...Are you okay?" Naya nodded too quickly. "I... yes." She wasn't. Because something inside her heart had just whispered— "I found you." She didn't know why. She didn't know who he was. But as the autumn wind carried golden leaves between them... For the first time in years... The loneliness she had always carried felt just a little lighter.
