Where It Feels Safe

Amara didn’t sleep. She lay awake on the narrow bed, staring at the ceiling, Alexander’s words replaying in her mind like a wound that refused to close. Before I forget how to let you go. Her chest tightened. A soft knock sounded at the door. She almost ignored it—until she recognized the voice. “Amara? It’s Daniel.” She hesitated, then sat up. “Come in.” The door opened quietly. Daniel stepped inside, careful, respectful, his presence instantly different from Alexander’s overwhelming intensity. He noticed her red eyes, the way her arms were wrapped around herself. “You don’t look okay,” he said gently. She let out a humorless laugh. “That obvious?” He nodded. “Alexander has a way of leaving people feeling… unsettled.” Something in his tone—understanding, not judgment—broke her restraint. “I don’t know where I stand with him,” she admitted. “One moment he pulls me close, the next he pushes me away like I’m dangerous.” Daniel leaned against the wall, not crowding her. “Because to him, you are.” She frowned. “Dangerous?” “To his control,” Daniel said softly. “To the version of himself he’s spent years perfecting.” Silence settled between them, intimate and heavy. Daniel took a step closer, lowering his voice. “Can I say something without crossing a line?” She nodded. “You deserve to feel chosen,” he said. “Not protected from a distance. Not treated like a liability.” Her throat tightened. “And if choosing me puts someone at risk?” “Then they should trust you enough to let you decide,” he replied. She looked up at him, really looked at him. There was no arrogance there. No need to dominate. Just steadiness. Safety. For the first time in days, her breathing slowed. Without thinking, she rested her head briefly against his chest. Daniel froze. Then—slowly—he lifted a hand, hovering near her back. “Tell me to stop.” She didn’t. His hand settled lightly against her spine, grounding, warm. Not possessive. Not demanding. Just there. “I won’t hurt you,” he murmured. “Not ever.” Her eyes burned with unshed tears. And somewhere deep inside her, a dangerous thought took root: What if this is what love is supposed to feel like?
