Chapter One

798 Words
Yet another laboring presentation I must sit through, thought Nandi looking at her colleague lazily reflecting on her career choices. Lately she has been feeling in a rut, no longer passionate about her work, at only 24 she was close to being a Junior executive in one of the leading banks in Africa which is impressive considering that she had only entered the working market 5 years ago. Owing to her intelligence she started university at 15 and punched through her degree and honors with ease, instead of staying at Uni to be an academic and continue with research she rather chose climbing the corporate ladder.  "That will be all for today, please remember to finalize your travel arrangements with Rahab COB today... The training in Ghana is very critical for the successful implementation of this system" Dave said trying to grab Nandi's attention.  "Sure thing" Nandi said trying to compose herself realizing that her colleagues may have noticed her dazing off during the presentation.  Irrespective of how bored she may get from her work, traveling always excited her, it didn't matter how many times she has been to the country, she always tried to come back with a new piece of history every time she goes out of her hometown.   Nandi POV I swear the voice in my head is becoming more vivid each day, I have purposely not mentioned it anyone at home, just now they will think I'm going Loco and have me admitted into a mental institution. This is Africa it's easy for anyone to jazz you up, next thing you going mental, they will probably blame it on getting too educated. There are way too many stories of people who have turned into hobos in the street, when you ask they say they went crazy from too much reading, yep I kid you not it is a thing around here.  Laughing at my thoughts I get up from bed rushing to finish packing...  I  hear a faint conversation between my grandma and mother debating if it's time they should tell her and how will she react, my mother crushing it saying, she has lived her life normal, she probably didn't inherit it. I shake my head thinking who these two are gossiping about, I have often been privy of many conversations, not because I enjoy eavesdropping, just that I happen to have very good ears, sometimes way too good for my benefit as I have had conversations I wish for the life of me I could forget and well sometimes it has worked well for me, especially in the office, it's interesting what people say once you turn your back... a blessing and a curse I suppose.  Anyway, let me introduce myself, I am Nandi 24yrs still living at home cos well my gran just doesn't want me to live my best life, 2nd born of 2 kids, with my brother being so overprotective it’s not even funny, alas because of that have not managed to get myself a proper boyfriend, in high school everyone was just scared of my brother and when I got to varsity, I was just too busy to have a social life. Now here I am worried I will die a virgin; I mean I would like to think I am a catch. I have caught men stealing lustful looks my way, but nothing ever comes out it, some asks for my number though, been to a few dates of which mostly resulted in me sending code red messages to Thandi, my BFF.  One time she came to the restaurant acting like a crazy woman and accused me of stealing her husband, the guy ran without even looking back, the embarrassment was too much for me to appreciate the lengths she would go for me, it did get me out of a terrible date though, possibly sufficient for me to forgive her obsession with my bro.  "If you don't come down now, don't blame be if there is nothing left for you to eat" Langa shouts with food evident in his mouth. I have no doubt the food goes straight to his height... I Mean the guy is tall... I used to think my father was tall until my brother hit 16, it was like he went on overnight growth hormones pills, my father mentioned something about being in the order of the first-born males of his lineage... Didn't pay attention to the stories, all I knew is he been cockblocking me and his size made very well sure that no guy even looks my way, no wink, no false bump or shoulder rub, at that rate even if a guy blinked my way I would have dropped it but here we are...
