CHAPTER 9DAN had really no hope that any of his shots had reached a vital spot in the grizzly, so what he and Web saw ten days later did not surprise him too much. They discovered the tracks of the Black Grizzly on the ground near the carcass of a heifer he had obviously killed. Dan knew it had happened only a very short time before, because only a small part of the carcass had been eaten and there was no sign that any other beasts of prey had been there to snatch an easy meal. The only tracks visible were those of the Black Grizzly, who was, as usual, plainly identified by the imprint of his deformed foot. His tracks leading away from the place showed that he had left in haste.
