Nothing makes a publisher angrier than receiving a submission that doesn’t follow their guidelines. They aren’t posted to make your life difficult; they’re specific to each publisher and not formatting your submission per the guidelines is a sure way to get your manuscript rejected without it even being read.
Publishers all want something slightly different. The best rule of thumb is to read all submission guidelines at least twice! Read them once to make sure you understand them.
