Chapter 9: Confessions in the Night

854 Words
The city lights of Manila sparkled below, but inside the Valerio penthouse, the atmosphere was heavy with anticipation. Bella had stayed late again, reviewing sketches and plans for the upcoming gala collection. She told herself it was just work, but her heart betrayed her every time Ethan leaned close, offering advice or simply standing near. Ethan, as usual, arrived without warning. This time, however, he didn’t just hover or tease. He shut the door behind him, the sound echoing like a drumbeat in Bella’s chest. “Bella,” he said, voice low and steady, almost vulnerable. “We need to talk. Alone.” Her stomach twisted. She nodded silently, pushing her sketches aside. Ethan approached, his dark eyes scanning her face, searching for something unspoken. “These past weeks… the contract, the appearances… it’s complicated,” he said, his tone softer than she had ever heard. “For both of us.” Bella swallowed hard. “I know,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. “It’s… harder than I thought. Pretending. Staying calm around you. Staying calm around Dante.” He stepped closer, the space between them shrinking until it was charged, electric. “Bella, I don’t want pretend anymore,” he whispered, voice husky. “I’ve tried to convince myself that this is just a business arrangement, just a game… but I can’t.” Her heart pounded, each word unraveling her carefully maintained walls. “Ethan… we can’t—this is supposed to be a contract. Nothing more. It’s…” “Not nothing,” he interrupted gently, cupping her face with one hand. “Everything. You’re everything I didn’t know I wanted, everything I didn’t know I needed. And it terrifies me. But I can’t deny it. I can’t walk away. I won’t.” Bella’s breath caught, and her body betrayed her with every instinct. She wanted to step back, to resist, but the pull was too strong. Her pulse raced as their eyes locked, the world outside fading to nothing. “I… I feel it too,” she whispered finally, her voice barely audible. “I’ve tried to ignore it… tried to focus on the contract, on work… but every time you’re near, I…” Her words faltered, and she looked down, ashamed of how her heart betrayed her. Ethan’s thumb brushed against her cheek, tilting her face up until their eyes met. “Shh,” he murmured. “You don’t have to explain. I understand. And I feel the same.” A shiver ran through her. The months of teasing, tension, and stolen moments had all led to this—the first time their walls crumbled together. “I want more than this… pretend, contract, appearances,” Ethan continued, his voice low and urgent. “I want… you. Not just as my partner for the gala, not just as someone I’m tied to in a contract… I want you, Bella. Only you.” Her chest tightened, emotions threatening to overwhelm her. “Ethan… what about Dante? What about everything that’s waiting outside?” Ethan’s expression hardened slightly, protective and unwavering. “Let him watch. Let the world talk. Let them try to interfere. None of it matters if we’re honest with each other. None of it matters if we don’t let him get to us. Bella… I’m not letting anyone take you from me. Not him. Not anyone.” For a moment, silence hung between them, filled only with the unspoken weight of their confessions. Bella felt her defenses crumble completely. The attraction, the longing, the undeniable connection—they were all real. And for the first time, she let herself lean into it, into him, into everything that had been building for weeks. Ethan’s hand slid down to hold hers, and he brought it to his lips, pressing a gentle, possessive kiss to her knuckles. “This is just the beginning,” he whispered. “But I promise… I’ll protect you. And I’ll make you mine, in every way that matters.” Bella’s eyes brimmed with tears she didn’t try to hide. “I… I’m scared,” she admitted softly. “Scared of falling… scared of getting hurt.” “You won’t get hurt,” he said firmly, brushing a tear from her cheek with his thumb. “I’ll make sure of it. Just… trust me. Trust us.” She nodded, leaning into him, letting herself be held, letting herself feel what she had fought against for so long. The warmth, the intensity, the promise in his eyes—it was overwhelming and intoxicating all at once. And somewhere in the city below, Dante was already planning his next move. But in that penthouse, in that moment, Bella and Ethan allowed themselves to forget the world. Forget rivals, contracts, and obligations. There was only the truth of what was between them—and it was stronger than anything either had expected. As they stood together, the first real night of honesty and vulnerability, Bella realized something she hadn’t admitted even to herself: this wasn’t pretend anymore. Love had crossed the line—and she didn’t want it to stop.
